I realise this is a tough ask but here goes

Knocking noise from front of car, seems worse when pulling away and when accelerating during turning (left and right). Doesn't sound like it's internal to the engine, but thinking it could be an engine mount or suspension related? Can sometimes hear it as the car comes to rest, but not always

It's a diesel 4x4

Just passed MOT with only a steering rod end replacement

droplink loose? Get underneath, tighten everything and spray everything rubber with silicone lube, if that fixes it, you've found the problem!

My money is in CV joint. Is it worse when turning and accelerating at low speed out of junctions.

Oh sorry check your wheels are tightened correctly.

If it's a Volvo then it's the CV joint stub axle splines creaking in the hub. Replace the bolts with Xc90 items and tighten to correct torque. For any other make/model then **** knows!

Wouldn't an MOT pick this up?

My choice?
Drive shaft.

To test outer CV joint, find an empty car park and do a circle on full lock. It'll make the most noise then.
