In fairness, I think that has also been said of Sheen (in parts) and certainly Brando.
However, he was probably a cult hero to at least two generations for Easy Rider and Apocalypse Now. Certainly an actor I followed with interest after his performance in Apocalypse Now.

Yeah, Easy rider did it for me, that's a great film. Although to be fair Nickleson did steal the show a bit.
