Wife got her insurance renewal through today she has 8 yrs NCD she is 36 yrs old and car is a Scenic.

Last year it was £295.05 Fully Comp

This year they want £458.53 some bloomin rise eh!?!

I phone them up to discuss this and they said well its because you had a claim (me not her on my car same insurer though), claim was NOT my fault as pedestrian walked into the side wing of my car at 30mph. It seems they are taking the micky somewhat. Obviously i expected insurance to go up but by over 50% FFS. So i told them they would be losing my wife and then when my insurance is due me too. She didn't seem bothered 😯

...pedestrian walked into the side wing of my car at 30mph...

30mph?!

was it this chap?

(if YOU have a claim/incident/whatever, and you want to be a named driver on your wife's car, how about only driving the scenic under the 3rd party insurance you'll have from your insurance ?)

Go elsewhere then - sure to be cheaper.

And use something like Quidco to get a cashback too.

They tried this with my wife. She had a direct debit to pay about £400 a year fully comp on a citroen C3 in central Bradford (high crime area), automatic renewal, £970. No extra claims made, no pints no convictions, when I queried it they said it was due to the area, I did point out that Bradford had had a crime problem for more than the last 12 months... Changed insuror, she now pays £400 again

Ha Ha...i meant i was travelling at 30mph. He was alright, bloody nose, grazes and left the scene with his partner even though i offered to call ambulance etc and no claim made by him. Obviously i reported to Police and had to go the station to produce docs that day. Independent accident investigator also concluded i was in the clear. Seems insurance company are trying to claw back the money paid for repairs to my car.

Just seems awful after being with them for a fair few years.

Is this to do with with woman suddenly having to pay the same as men that I've heard about.
Car insurance has certainly shot up over the last few years.

Also, I have been told that it's a no claims bonus, not a no blame bonus..
But anyway, the answer as always with insurance is to shop around. You often find that quotes drop by 100quid just by haggling.

We've just done both of our cars with Admiral Multicar. Saved a few quid.

They're all chancers.
My renewal back in Feb was £800-something, up from about £650. No claims, and going from 0 ncb to 1. I phoned them up and they were adamant that it wouldn't get any cheaper. This was whilst I was on their website, looking at a quote from them for £528.

My insurance shot up this year despite having 12 years NCB and no claims or convictions.

I did the usual tricks of adding my parents and I am no co-habiting (true) which got my insurance back down to about £270 including business use. I initially had it down as 9yrs ncb but when I checked my renewal (same company but I didn't drive for 6 months and then got a new car so wasnt a continuation) I actually had 12 years and I was amazed they gave me £35 back for the extra 3 years. I thought anything over 5 was full NCB. Amazingly business use only added about £3 to my policy.

I am back with Admiral for both our cars as we can't get any cheaper with the same cover. But they have now got "protected" and "guaranteed" no claims which cost a fair chunk on your policy AND they also put the excess up so you seem to pay double for protecting your NCB now.

Oh and call them and haggle armed with other quotes and check the cashback sites.

Bunch of gangsters the lot of them.

I managed to get my insurance down a fair chunk simply by declining the renwal quote, and then signing up for a new policy with the same insurer - exactly the same details in their website yielded a quite around £100 cheaper!

I was also fairly surprised to discover that adding my learner driver wife to my policy made it cheaper than for me alone, despite having about 15 years of claim-free motoring.

got mine from admiral. my auto renewal price was over £1700 (£800 the year before) I went to them and got it for £960. Not only are they great and sponsor the Welsh Rugby Team....but the bloke I spoke to turned out to be a STW - regular and, when I get time to go down to S. Wales, will be meeting up for a ride.

Can't argue with that

You should try being 17 and getting insurance, now that's a piss take.
I got quoted £3420 for a 1L Rover Metro.

Mine also went up from around £450 to £800 for no reason as i hadnt claimed. Just like everything else at the moment everything is flying up in prices. I shopped around and got it cheaper elsewhere.

Car Insurance is the biggest racket ever, especially the "no claims bonus" whereby it costs less if you don't claim, but then you can get "protected no claims" whereby you pay more in order to pay less ??!!

Smoke and mirrors. We are paying people money whose main function in life is to dream up ways of not paying out.

I have been driving lots of years and have never claimed (tempting fate I know) if I had self insured (not allowed due to Draconian compulsory car insurance) I would be thousands of pounds up.

I am about to buy another 4 wheeled vehicle and will resent every penny paid to this state mandated gouging.

Walk away, find someone else. I do this every damn year, I don't know what's so odd about it. There's only one insurance company that I've ever been with that hasn't taken the mick and continues to quote reasonable prices year on year and that's Sky. Everyone else seems to come back with an uncompetitive quote, they seem to rely on winning new customers then losing them again.

Car Insurance is the biggest racket ever, especially the "no claims bonus" whereby it costs less if you don't claim, but then you can get "protected no claims" whereby you pay more in order to pay less ??!!

And while paying more to pay less, you still get shafted if you claim as your overall risk level has gone up.

The law's there to protect the public, not prosecute the motorist. It applies to Road Traffic Act requirements (Third Party Only) to provide protection for those injured in a motor accident. Would you prefer it that someone who is crippled by a motoring accident by an unsured driver without a pot to piss in be left to fend for themselves or be cared for by the State/taxpayer?

If you want to make a difference then start by getting at your MP about the "fell over & hurt yourself and looking for someone to blame?" or "injured yourself because you're stupid but want compensation anyway?" ambulance chasing crooks that have a bigger impact on the cost of insurance than any natural disaster.

I heard somewhere (annual) insurance prices are going up something like a pound a day.

I'm paying £2 a day pretty much, although I have had two bumps in the last two years (both the other parties fault and paid for by them/their insurers). Will be getting rid when my lease is up in May and seeing how I get on without for a wee while. I also have £0 excess on the policy which will increase it a bit but was stung by Swiftcover and their £250 compulsory excess in the small print so decided this was worth it.

Renewing with Admiral was cheaper than any new quote I could find and they have been good to deal with for the two above.

This constantly amazes me as it's happened with every insurance renewal I've had over the past 2-3 years (about 5 renewals) and with one exception I've gone elsewhere.

Why oh why when they spend a fortune on attracting new customers do they not see the value in keeping the existing ones. Am I missing something ❓

And then they wonder why some folk don't driver with insurance 😯

We have a 700cc smart car (admittedly a Brabus) that now has increased in insurance to the same as my honda civic sport.. bloody joke!!!

Motor insurance is increasing in part because of a massive increase in fraudulent claims...
+ I've been told that insurance cos do not just make profit by taking more in premiums than they pay out in claims. They take the income from premiums and invest it in the markets to maximise their profits. With the markets playing merry hell at the moment, they're increasing premiums to cover the difference...

Aye, two of us here, both 37, we have a friend insured on one - a retired Baptist minister, Touran and Yaris diesels outside on a driveway, Yaris @ 5000mls a year, no accidents on record, never lost our NCD since we bought our first car at 21 years old, middle of the highlands, both D1 tested, I D1+E tested; only the Yaris used for commuting....and still our premiums went up 20% at renewal despite a good shop around and ending up with a multi car premium.

How could you get any cheaper?

So you claimed, and you didn't expect the insurance to go up?

Out of interest, how much did the claim cost?

I'm not sure how I'm getting away with it, but I've just renewed my car insurance and paying close enough to what I paid last year to make no difference. The renewal quote was the same as if I went via moneysupermarket for a new quote and was still the cheapest out there. I'm always reading the press reports of rising premiums, but mine never go up - same with house insurance as well. Maybe I just live in a very good area or am very lucky.

after being with them for a fair few years

That's your problem, right there...

Ins Cos take the mickey after year 2, IMO...

FWIW, I'd be very worried about Admiral Multicar...

... I've been with Admiral for 18 months. Mrs rkk01 recently changed car, and I suggested she try Admiral multicar - bring both our vehicles "under one roof" so to speak.

She got a slightly cheaper quote than other insurers, but they told her that my insurance would stay the same this year, and go up to approx £800 when I renew - I'm currently paying about 500 IIRC.

Multicar = locked in more tightly when they start ripping you off...

ETA - it does seem to be one area of business where large rate increases are the norm. If I told clients that we were going to up our rates by 50%, well, I suspect we wouldn't have many clients

I always shop around for my insurance every year, renewal quote on my 1.8 focus was about £500, ended up paying £245 and getting £65 cashback from Quidco. I found that when I added business use onto my policy the price actually dropped. Also having a rural postcode helps, difference of about £30 from my old house to the new one.

Unfortunately I spoiled it all recently by swapping into a group 16 car, premium went up to a whole £374 for the year.

Actually, you can, you just need to lodge a security deposit. Many large organisations do this - BT, police forces etc

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/155

however at half a million pounds, the deposit is quite large and if as an individual can deposit that much, you can probably not bother about the increases in premiums anyway....

Like TheGingerOne my insurance increase this year wasn't too bad, about 10%. Did the comparison thing, found a slightly cheaper quote on the comaprison website, rang my insurer and they matched the lower price. Ironically when I put my details directly into the website of the cheaper insurer later the premium went up.....

a beast of a 1.5 dci megane 5dr hatch. I never had my own car before last year (always had company cars). Didn't help that I had a claim as well 🙁

Sweet mercy! 😯

Sounds like it may be too late for this year, but you'd do well shopping around. I'm 32 with 1 year ncb, an own fault write-off claim 2 years ago, 3 speeding points, not living in the most salubrious area of Edinburgh, a fairly powerful modified Jap import, and I'm just over £500 fully comp.

Flying Ox - which company?!?

I've just asked about changing a 1.0 polo which my newly qualified sons drive for a 1.4. Almost double the price to insure!!! Stupid thing is the 1.0 is so gutless it's a positive danger........

b r........if you read my first post it states i did expect it to go up. The insurance in question is my wifes policy not mine. The accident i claimed for was on my policy as it was my car that the daft bloke walked into .

Cost of claim i have no idea as they arranged for it to be repaired i had nothing to do with it. Damage to door, wing mirror and A pillar so probably a fair bit. We have been with them for over 4 years, i have(had) 7 years NCD and wife has 8 years NCD. I just consider the rise to be disproportionate.

claim was NOT my fault

You claimed for it, therefore as far as insurance company is concerned it is. You're a named driver on her policy, you're now a higher risk than you were, of course the cost is going up.

Elephant, on a 10-month NCB accelerator policy. In the past I've rotated between Elephant, Sky and Adrian Flux. They have always been very cheap for me, and not stupid when it comes to a single speeding ticket or modifications.

Well a bit of net searching and savings made.

Went with another insurer saving £135 against the renewal quoted and because i went through Top Cashback i will get £42.92 cashback after 3 months if policy still in place. Result 🙂
