What is the best way to write a CV these days. There are lots of websites that all seem to conflict and want to take a small fortune of you. My biggest struggle is with the summary section - is this written in the first person or third person? I want a short paragraph and then bullet points.
Also if anyone needs a mechanical design engineer with 11 years experience in the transport/nuclear industries in the Kent area let me know! We are relocating to be closer to family having lived away for 10 years.
First time i have actively searched for employment since I got my graduate placement 12 years ago!
Personal preference, if you are writing about you, then don't use third person!
Also, as I've been reading a few CVs this week, go for telling people what you do and what value that ads.
Examples from this week, explaining how much the project budget was but not what you did on that project, using a whole bunch of project specific terminology that meant nothing to me and still doesn't say what you actually did. Explaining what Vodafone is, thanks!
My ideal CV gives you an insight into what someone did on a project or within a job, but leaves enough detail out for questions to be formed, so people are interested in asking you something MSOffice to get a job done, tell me how you helped get it done.
It's been a long week!
[i]Mechanical engineer with 11 years experience in transport and nuclear industries[/i] will cover you for the first bit / strap line unless there's something specific you need to mention - e.g mine is
[i]Business Analyst[/i] with over 20 years of experience in the development, implementation and support of multiple banking packages on the x & y platforms.
I change the bit italics depending on what the job is.
Then this
go for telling people what you do and what value that ads.
e.g.
Implemented x and y nuclear widgets which resulted in 15% decrease in costs
Designed new process for x which reduced transport safety incidents by 20% over a z year period.
