So BG are increasing my bill hugely, I've never swapped supplier before so am at a bit of a loss as to who is best. I'll avoid NPower on the number of horror stories I've read. I seem to recall octopus energy getting recommendations on here and their calculator says I'll save £120 a year but hunting round, "bulb" think they will save me £300 a year but I've never heard of them before.

Any thoughts or advice from the STW Massive?

Looked at bulb think they wanted paid by debit card monthly rather than DD . This didn't sit easy with me so stuck with flow on fixed rate.

Ovo purely for their customer service.

We're on "Help Beat Cancer Fixed Price Energy January 2018 Online" with Scottish Power, expecting quite a price hike wherever we switch to or renew with them after Xmas, at least SP have no exit fee.

Worth checking on Topcashback/Quidco, especially if you have dual fuel.

Wer'e with First Utility, our contract with them was up recently & when I looked on some comparison sites it wasn't worth changing.

We moved to bulb recently, and pay by direct debit. All been painless so far.

If you (or anyone else) wants to switch to Bulb then email me and I'll send you a link from Bulb that will apparently get us both £50.

OVO here. website is good, bills are accurate (as far as I can tell) and customer service (when I've had to use it) is pretty good. I don't think they're the absolute cheapest, but comparable to all the majors.

Changed to the Octopus green tariff a few months back. Not had to speak to them yet but communication we have received has been good.

Was previously with OVO and no complaints about them other than they are not as cheap/competitive pricewise as they used to be.
Switched to Octopus about 3months ago and it was easy and painless.

There website is easy to use and bills are as clear to read as OVO's were.

Have used Abico in the past and again no issues with them other than price.

Good Energy here. Very happy with the service when I've needed it. Apparently they're not the cheapest but we're low consumers anyway.

Likewise for a referral let me know.

Recently switched to Avro.

Not great so far. Issues with giving previous supplier readings, account usage not working right and customer service seem to be hiding.

Really a case of you get what you pay for. If no improvement will switch to OVO, as on the plus side, no exit fees.

Put your usage details into the calculator on MSE. Best deals depend on usage and location so see what they come up with and then factor in the service ratings if you want, though IME they're all much of a shitty muchness as far as that goes. Worth using MSE rather than the other comparison sites because MSE don't filter out results from companies that don't give them a kickback

First Utility have been brill for me, notwithstanding a phone call to offer me a (genuine) cheaper than you'll get even on our own website - offer which rewarded loyalty.

Oh, was just about to press the button (honestly, was just a few mins ago filling in the online form and thought "I'll just do a search of them on STW"). On MSE they were second on list of saving (first on the list had bad reviews), reviews of Avro were +ve (75%good 20%ok 5%bad).

I'll try a quote from ovo.

I might have just got unlucky. Still might come good.

We've been with Ovo the last two years, no problems at all. Interesting that their interest reward thing is going up, so if you've built up credit before winter you get 4 or 5% interest on it; that's more than any of our savings accounts! We should have maxed out the limit... 🙂

After much spreadsheet bashing we're just changing to Tide, the time-of-use tariff from Green Energy, as we use very little at peak time but run the dishwasher and whatnot overnight a lot, so it works out a bit cheaper.

As an aside I would say DO NOT use Scottish power.

I've been with Spark Energy since moving house in October, they are hopeless. they haven't even billed me in that time. Avoid at all costs.

OVO - The best rate for a savings account you will find. (well we use it as a savings account, daft not to)

Ovo here since start of the year.
They supply energy, they bill you for it, they have lots of info about your usage if you want it. Customer service is excellent - we did have some issues with having smart meters fitted but that was probably as much the 3rd party as Ovo.

Just switched from Scottish Power to Green Network Energy.

GNE are pretty new to UK domestic supply, but the transition was almost painless.

I had absolutely no issues with SP for the 3 years prior to that. They were consistently cheapest and their website allowed us to manage our account very easily. Sadly, they could no longer compete on price so we jumped ship.

Just to balance the Ovo praise, I've been with them a few years and yes the website is easy, giving readings is easy, customer service is polite and helpful, but on my last comparison they were nowhere near the top half of the comparison table so I left for Tonik Energy (who were cheaper and had good reviews). 2 months after the supposed switch Ovo were still merrily taking money from me (I've now cancelled the DD) and haven't yet provided me with final readings or closed the a/c. The switchover issues may not be entirely their fault, but combined with the price rises I'm less favourable towards them now.

Similar experience - leaving Ovo is not their strong point. Had to chase them several times to get our balance repaid.

Tonik here, not the cheapest better pretty near to it. Energy flows, no complaints.

My recent energy suppliers in order I was with them: -

Sainsburys Energy (current) - British Gas in disguise - on a 12 month fix, no real issues
GBEnergy - changed to them, then they hiked prices significantly, so I started the process to leave, then they went bust. Switch still went through and they even auto-refunded my in credit balance
Southern Electric - fine - no issues - had to request a refund of my credit balance on leaving, but this was paid without issue
Scottish Power - fine - no issues - had to request a refund of my credit balance on leaving, but this was paid without issue

I'd never ever consider having NPower - they sent debt collectors after the previous owners of my house, despite me telling them on several occasions they had moved on. I was told it had been resolved numerous times before they finally got it sorted.

Busy looking at this too Bulb has been recommended by some family so priced them, apparently I save £480 according their quote instead of paying £89 per month I'll pay £118 and some how make this massive saving. 😆

I've been happy with First Utility since switching last year, I can't remember if they were the cheapest at the time (I presume that's why I chose them though :p ) but happy enough with the service received.

Same here - they always offer new tariffs when mine is coming up for renewal and they are always competitive enough to ensure I don't bother looking elsewhere. The meter reading app is easy to use and the website is relatively easy to navigate.

Good Energy here too. Being on a mountainbiking forum, I don't think there's any excuse for not going with a green-as-possible provider, or at least making sure your provider has a green energy option - and you're on it.

Cheers for the advice, have just gone with OVO so fingers crossed. I'll keep, you all updated as tomthe smoothness of change. BG have just queried the last meeting reading as it is less than they're estimate (just had a new combo to replace our 17 year old one).

EDF here. No particular issues good or bad but ...

I wanted my wife's name added to the bill just so she would have a proof of address, since in this pathetic global backwater there is no functioning public administration to verify that stuff

And

They did it, no hassle.

Phew!

Unless they go bust and you lose all your money (no deposit guaranty as they are not a bank)

That being said as a BG customer the thread is very interesting snd I will check OVO

Update: got my BG letter, I have dual fuel so as well the 12.5% electric increase they are removing the £15 dual fuel discount

Will definitely be moving supplier

Similar story when I left but they only took 1 additional payment even though I was already about £300 in credit.
Cancelled the DD as soon I noticed and had to chase them up for the credit to be put back into my Bank account.
