The Kennel Club.

Responsible for Bulldogs who can't breath, GSD with massive back and hip problems, King Charles spaniels with skulls too small for their brains. I could go on.

Bunch of tossers.

You could go on but its old and boring news . The KC and many of the better breeders have been fighting to get ride of the puppy farmers for some time with some good results in breed health improvements .

No. It's not. It's a long standing and still current problem.

Anyone who isn't a lowlife would want rid of puppy farms.

The KC are responsible for setting some ridiculous breeding standards that they refuse to change despite the known health problems and the suffering endured by a lot of animals.

We found the breeder for our Lab on the Gundog day years back. It was a very enjoyable day out.

This. Plus my experience with some local Crufts breed winners puts me off the whole thing entirely.

Can I also add hatred for people who just breed animals for profit.

Years ago I travelled to B'ham on a coach with the competitors. Very well-behaved pooches.

Went on gundog day hoping to see the sire of my beloved Golden (RIP). Gundogs are great, one day perhaps. 8)

Edit: pics of the Newfies please. 🙂

This site is interesting - you've all probably seen it before but it highlights the physical changes to a few popular breeds over 100 years or so that have proved desirable in KC etc. standards but to the detriment of the animal's health dogs

I've been watching snippets including some of Gundog day that featured a most gorgeous Flat Coat. Interesting to see the overseas breeds too, goodness knows how many exist. The Agility class was so exciting and those pooches absolutely loved every minute of it. 8)

*groan*

The Flat Coat is lovely (my mum has one and has previously had two others), but I preferred the Welsh Springer that got passed over.

I still hope a gundog wins though...

mcj78 - is it only me that thinks the dogs on the left on that site look way better than the mutations on the right?

Yeah, on the news, winning dog gets back home to Belgium, promptly pops its clogs. Autopsy to find cause, I believe.
Highly bred animal, so could easily be natural causes, but could, possibly, be foul play.
Shame, lovely looking dog. 😐

Wife's team came 2nd in small agility. Properly proud of them all. 🙂

There's plenty wrong with many of the breed's. Small gene pools and consanguineous matings are inherently flawed from a biological perspective. However, there are responsible breeders out there who won't charge stupid amounts of money and who do the best health testing available. It's difficult for the KC to control every single one of the breeders and judges (some of whom have more influence than the KC itself).

I found it interesting the amount of genetics coverage on the More4/Channel4 coverage. There are plenty of new developments and an awful lot of potential for identifying many of these traits. As I said previously, once progress has been made its down to breeders, and owners choosing a breeder, to help set a standard and improve the genetic health of their dogs.

So wrong. Even 10 mins after the Scottie's won the handler is still strangling the little bugger and brushing him.
Give him a break , luv...

Life's a bitch; so she'll be pumping out two litters a year, but if she was a he she could roger herself senseless at £5k a time...
A good colour is black; goes with most soft furnishings and car interiors.

The KC are responsible for working dogs that can't work and lots of breeds with health issues. If you want to see working dogs in action go and watch a field trial. No the Labs and Springers may not be the breed 'standard' but hell can they work!

It's also business, like livestock farming.

Cant think of many things worse than mincing at a dog show ,took a dog to a village show once and that was bad enough .The dodgy breeding and farming is abhorrent.Pedigree dogs are a lot about look at me ,my money bought this status symbol

It's not a business for most. Do you think that 12yo lad was a vicious puppy farmer?

Still popular enough to bugger up the M42 all the way back to the M5 junction on Thursday morning. Grr!

Do you think he won't benefit financially from his dog, now & in the future?
Showing his wee dog is just a hobby for now but if he carries on he could make a bob or 2. Not saying he's gonna be a Richard Branson but there are £££'s to be made.

We went on gundog day one year, I couldn't help but laugh at all the fat show Labradors. Not a patch on the working lab I've got!
It wasn't a bad day out though.
As we all know though it's not the dog on the end of the lead, it's WHO'S on the end of the lead that wins!

Our dog won it's class at crufts two years ago and we've made no money whatsoever out of him. Sure, we've been approached by several breeders but the bloodlines haven't been correct (to close together in our view) I'm not saying he's going to die an expensive Virgin, we'd love a pup off him but if the bloodlines aren't correct it isn't going to happen. .my wife, when out walking our pooch has also had local chavs coming up to her and wanting him to be put with there staffy. 🙄 when on occasion she's asked why the response is "because a Ridgeback/staffy x would be hard as nails" 😐 usually when she say's the stud fee for a Ridgeback crufts show winner is 1k it generally puts them off.

I'll agree with mitsumonkey, the lab that won this year in its gundog class was as fat as me!

My own working Springers are as fit as fiddles, I keep getting told that they need to be fattend up, which just isn't the case, so it shows that people see my dogs as abnormal, compared to the fat standard!
