MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
My fav cover at the moment is Porno for Pyros doing Satellite of Love.
And your's is....?
biffy clyro, umberella
the fray, hips dont lie.
both on live lounge 2.
Whisky in the jar- Metallica
Coldplay's cover of Joe Satriani's If I could Fly 😉
Suicide is painless by the manic street preachers
Fantastic.
And, no cover would better the original but this is close.

For some reason no sound on my computer at the mo so hope these sound OK, if not do a search - well worth it.
Warpigs by Faith No More
ooh yeah, that's a good un coyote, off to dig that out the collection.
We could really do with a preview button, second one was supposed to be this.
Just Like Honey
take on me - reel big fish
billyboulders - how can you say thats better than the original ??!?!?!?!!?!
two for me
Jimi Hendrix - all along the watchtower
jeff buckley - hallelujah
the breeders - happiness is a warm gun
2nd for Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah - better than Leonard Cohen's original and soooo far ahead of that x-talent show winning one's version...
For me a cover version should be different to the original - it may not end up being better but if you're just going to perform the song in the same way - why bother?
So on that note - how about Drop Nineteens version of 'Angel' by Madonna or Uncle Tupelo's country version of 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' by The Stooges
The Sisters Of Mercy - Gimme Shelter
They also did some good versions of:
1969 - MC5? Stooges?
Jolene - Dolly Parton
Emma - Hot Chocolate
Knocking On Heaven's Door - Dylan
and some pretty poor ones too:
Louie Louie
Ghost Rider
Sister Ray
Joe Cocker's "With a little help from my Friends" Even Lennon taught it was better than the Beatles version
Rem - Wichita Lineman.
Gary Jules - Mad World
Nirvana - The man who sold the world.
To name just a few.
Smashing Pumpkins, Landslide.
Faith No More - Easy, as well.
which one Justa? Like I said no sound on the computer at the mo so just googled the artists/titles
But I did say Just like honey is good just not as good, if you mean modern love then I might have chosen a bad performance but yes the Last town chorus single of it was better than Bowies '80's one. (big Bowie fan BTW so not taking anything away)
heard it through the grapevine - marvin gaye
tears of a clown - the beat
feeling good - muse
all along the watchtower - hendrix
William Orbit - Adagio for Strings
Jimmy Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Dylan wrote amazing lyrics, but was a shit performer IMO)
Depeche Mode - A Pain that I'm used to (Jacques Lu Cont Remix) (if you've heard the original, you'd wonder if it's possible to make a worse song! This Remix is awesome though...
Dirty Funker - Lithium Injects a whole load of energy into a very very sombre original
Tone Loc - Wild Thing (Peaches Remix) Original is quality, but this remix/cover of it is even better in my book!
Ok, so a couple are remixes rather than full on covers, but they're totally different to the original and better in every way in my book. Enjoy! 😉
Nobody mention cash's version of "hurt" yet?
John, what's up with Tom & the boys version? 😉
Cowboy Junkies "sweet jane"
I love cover versions me 😀
if you're talking about nirvana's unplugged version of man who sold the world that is pony. Cobain cocks the solo up and sounds like he's really not interested. I'm was a massive fan of nirvana (and i'm just as big a fan of Bowie) and i so was disappointed that nirvana even did an unplugged, as I just knew it would be shit.
Elvis - Bridge over troubled waters
Good call billyboulders.
Toy Dolls have a stack of them.
I'm rather partial to The Order Of The Ebon Hand cover of The Banshees' "Spellbound."
2nd johnhoos's (good) sisters ones and would add "The Damage Done"
geoffj - gonna seek that one out personal Elvis fave cover is Love Letters (straight from your heart)
John, what's up with Tom & the boys version?
nothing particularly, but the Sisters' version brings back more memories.
my new band is learning some covers to go with our original material:
Porcupine Tree - Shallow
The Mission - Wasteland
Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
All About Eve - Flowers In Our Hair
goth revival machine?
benny and the jets. beastie boys
Wasn't near enough every Elvis song a cover version of something someone else had done?
Aleigh- William Orbit just did a version, rather than a cover. Bond did one too.
Has to be 'I think we're alone now', by The Tiffanies.
And every single Bob Dylan song sounds better sung by anyone else but him. Brilliant song writer- cr4p singer. I was alarmed to find out recently, that he's still alive!
Johnhoo, Their (the Sisters) version of Comfortably numb is good too (but hard to find) can email you an mp3 if you like.
Good luck covering she sells sanctuary (Some things are holy , like why you never hear any good Smiths covers )
travis, hit me baby one more time or whatever that awful britney spears song is
House of the Rising Sun has been done a few times; arguably the best version is the Animals' one.
And that French bird did a mean version of Paint It Black, but it's in French, so she cooduv been singing 'RudeBoy is a silly wally and he smells of poo', and I wouldn't know. I just wouldn't know...
All of Johnny Cash's American albums 😉 The Mercy Seat is my favourite I think.
The rest of the covers I like are a bit obscure...
Not my usual thing, and will probably get flamed for this, but...
Guns N Roses - Sympathy For The Devil
Just more twisted than the Stones version, which I like too of course, and I think Axl Rose's screech voice works better on it than Mick Jagger's.
flyingmonkeycorps..... I was about to say Cash's cover of The Mercy Seat.......
Cowboy junkies is a good call. Cash doing I see a darkness is my fav, original by that Bonny Prince Billy fella.
Question - like I said no sound on my failing dinosour of a computer so had to find Elvis on my ipod to listen to Love letters seeing as how this thread put me in mind of it.
Now, would you index it under E for Elvis or P for Presley? (took me ages to find it)
seeing as rudeboy has correctly said that my choice was a remix and not a cover, i like guns n roses' version of live and let die but i do like the wings version too
Good shout Aleigh. Their Live and let die was good - The Sisters knocked spots off GnR's Knockin on Heavens door though
Here's some pretty ****ed-up covers, from Slovenia's finest; Laibach:
Across the Universe
Life is Life
Sympathy for the Devil
In The Army Now
One Vision
And a particularly warped version of a Kim Wilde classic! (Aleigh, you may not want to hear this one)
Lawnmower Deth: Kids in Amercica
Choons dem...
i thought that bird off the x-factor did a great job of that song!
(i'll get my coat 😆 )
I'll pass it to you aleigh, (that camp blokes version on the shrek soundtrack was better - see I said I love cover versions :D)
rudeboy - that cover is just a load of old noise!! 😆 and they can't sing either 😉
GnR better than the Stones? oh dear oh dear. I've read some silly things on STW, but...
Anyway,
How about This Mortal Coil's Song to the Siren. Nick Cave's In the Ghetto.
Sid's My Way (ha!)
second the sisters,
Shiny Toy Guns rendition of Depeche Modes 'Stripped' is on a current well used playlist in our house at the mo.
If you can handle Bluegrass then Iron Horse album of Led Zeppelin covers is worth a go though I know one person who will be unlocking the gun cabinet for that suggestion. . . as well as several tracks on the Johny Cash album.
Another vote for Jeff Buckleys Hallelulah too.
Ziggy Stardust, Bauhaus
Man Who Sold the World, Nirvana
Wonderwall, Mike Flowers
Back for Good, Robbie Williams
come to mind, nothing against Bowie in particular
Dinosaur Jr's cover of the Cures "Just like Heaven"
Teenage Fanclub's "Like a Virgin"
and anything by Hayseed Dixie
Dezb, you take first prize so far, This Mortal Coil (Elizabeth Frazers?) Song to the the Siren is possibly one of the best records ever - yes I know how open to argument that statement is, I stand by it- 🙂
(Also a big fan of Sids My Way)
Rodrigo y Gabriela, Stairway to Heaven
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vNc5o9TU0t0&feature=PlayList&p=952A8FF8068A8E30&index=0&playnext=1
I like Skinhead O'Connor's version of 'Streets of London'...
Funnily enough, Sid Vicious' version, which is COMPLETELY different, is also bloody good.
The original Ralph McTell version, with a montage of some poignant images.
And Sid's version!
clareymorris - I got no sound on my computer so couldn't watch it but I have seen them do that at Glasto and it was mighty fine - good shout
Extreme Noise Terror's cover of Last Train to Trancentral by the KLF
Unforgettable!
And if we're talking skinhead o'conner Nothing Compares 2 U has to be included as one of the best covers.
And that French bird did a mean version of Paint It Black
Cripes, it must be astounding to be better than the stones.
Stop by Jamelia for me. Hairs on the back of my neck raising ability.
Jump. by Girls Aloud - OK maybe they just looked better doing it.
I feel I've let myself down.
Samuri; I never said it was better, merely that it was very good!
The Animals also did a mean version, too!
Cover of Going Underground by The Jam
I WIN! Best cover EVER 😉
Rudeboy, can you do us a link to the French version of Paint it Black?
Give us a mo...
Here you go:
Marie Laforet
'RudeBoy is a tw-at and he always smells of poo'...
Associates - Love Hangover
Joleen-White Stripes
Sympathy for the devil - Jane's Addiction
Obviously Jeff Buckley's Halleluja
Giel You'll be a woman soon - Urge Overkill
Oh oh oh, and Bonnie and Clyde by Luna
Jesus, read the comments on that YouTube vid. Scary.
gloria-hendrix
Joleen-White Stripes
Are you completely brain-dead? Jack White, better than the incomparable diminutive yet disproportionate Dolly Parton?
Wash your mouth out, stand in the corner, and go and have a good, hard think about your BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!
(Calm, RudeBoy; calm...)
White Stripes have done some good covers, mind. 'One More Cup Of Coffee' is a corker.
Ceremony (New Order) - Galaxie 500.
Get Into the Groove - Sonic Youth.
Jumpin' Jack Flash - Ananda Shankar.
Vapour Trail (Ride) - Trespassers William.
Cheers Rudeboy - still no sound on my computer but copied your french "paint it black" 'til when I get it working/get a new one. I't better be good! 😉
As far as Jack White goes his Jolene is OK (although I do like Dolly myself) and still not as good as the Sisters of Mercy version. The White Stripes "I just don't know what to do with myself" is f*n fantastic though. As is Death Letter (posted above)
I stick my neck out here, He is the best, living, guitar player.
Manic's version of "umberella"
Fun Lovin Criminals version of "I'm Not In Love"
Dave Mathews Bands version of "Wild Horses"
Ryan Adams version of "Wonderwall"
All pretty good imo. 8)
Hayseed Dixie - I don't feel like dancing (especially the video!!)
Gun - Word Up. Pretty much a one hit wonder, but so much more gutsy and powerful than the electro pop originally it's almost unrecognisable as the same song.
Forgot the best ever!!!!... Richie Havens here comes the sun!
(Found it while looking for Richard Hawleys Some Candy Talking - also very good)
As is the Caulfield Sisters version of Some Candy Talking!
right, let's get back onto The Sisters...
Knocking On Heaven's Door
I've seen them do Comfortably Numb live - runs nicely into Some Kind Of Stranger, which of course is my preferred part of the segwey...(sp)
I do believe Mr Eldritch is a fan of "our" favourite Australian songstress too... :-s
This Mortal Coil's version of Song To The Siren is pretty f***ing good too
Not that bothered about Bauhaus' Ziggy though
