Definitely the most overhyped party of the year. Even in my going out days it was always disappointing; rammed pubs, expensive entry to some places, more pissed dickheads than usual etc...
For the past ten years we've just done dinner and drinks at the parent's house, which is equally depressing but just about manageable. Jules Holland's bloody hooternanny is an excuse to get to bed early.
Anyway, happy new year to everyone!
Our village fireworks are at 6 and are pretty exceptional for a locally funded display.
I haven't bothered seeing in the New Year for a few years now. Can't be arsed with the sickly sentiment and cheesy countdowns. I never really enjoyed it in my younger years, not sure why?
My wife and I see the new year in every year, no party but we cook a nice 3 course meal, make the courses
last all evening, nice bottle of wine and cheese and biccies with port or perhaps some fizz after midnight, Bit of Hootenanny (it used to be Andy Stewart at one time) then off to bed around 1-ish. Sets us up for the New Year.
We finally ran out of French at 2am and staggered home in absolute awe. Can recommend.
Well done that man, the perfect antidote to all the miserable b'stards mithering about how shit their NYE was/is always.
Had a night out with the same gang I've known since school and my head tells me it was great. I guess miserable people are just miserable.
Went on a small hill with the masses and watched an excellent fireworks display.
I've done that a few times, and spent a few quiet ones at home - you should do what suits you.
I'm not fussed and can't be doing with all the enforced kissing and hugging everyone at midnight.....but had an absolutely lovely evening with 5 friends that was much needed and lifted the spirits. Couple of pints at friends local, then back for dinner and a silly game which went totally off track and ended up with everyone drawing on each faces in non permanent black marker and lot's of giggling. So a good excuse to get together with friends and make an effort at a crappy time of year.
That French party sounds awesome too!
We popped up to a friends house. She'd had a bad few weeks looking after an elderly neighbour and had spent most of NYE in hospital with him. Fortunately they convinced him to stay in as his oxygen levels were so poor (told he'd be dead if he went home) so she got a bit of a break from caring for him (he's no close family - just a neice and nephew from his wife's side that don't visit him but want his 'estate').
Had a good fairly relaxed evening !
Watched Black Adam up to Spanish tv started countdown then onto patio to watch the neighbours fireworks , which were full mental then watch the U.K. fireworks on telly.
Started watching on itv who decided it wasn’t important and had to whip over to bbc.
It’s still the ramp up to 3 kings day here so still Christmassy for another week.
Did seem to be pretty quiet around here tbh, have done new years on the coast with the expat brigade but meh.
May try something more exciting next year but can’t see myself rekindling my young new year eve clubbing days, although I may see if I can find some hot beach instagram style celebrations next year.
and ended up with everyone drawing on each faces in non permanent black marker and lot’s of giggling.
Could be funny to wake up and find it wasn’t actually non permanent :-).
I remember a party when someone passed out er slightly intoxicated and got spray glue and rice crispies on his head and another with everyone’s favourite permanent marker.
I normally can't be bothered with it, hardly drink, and the group of friends we used to make half an effort with was ruined by my mates borderline alcoholic wife getting pissed and sobbing as she wondered why her life was a mess.
First NYE since lockdown last night, he's left his wife, went round to one of the houses, 4 couples, 8 kids aged 11-17, got slightly tipsy, walked home at 2.30 this morning, woke up too late for the club run and slightly hungover, best NYE in ages. The only wife to properly overdo it is a very happy Happy Drunk* so all well and good.
* and also apparently a palmist and tarot reader as a party trick, which I'd never have guessed having known her for 18 years, working in various IT/project roles. She doesn't really know how she does it, suspects it's a lot of lucky guesses, but said she sometimes comes out with something so accurate it scares her. She refuses to do readings for people she knows "just in case...."
