I was led to believe that the following bulb would be the correct one for my elderly MagLite torch. "MaglLite Mag-Num Star II xenon bulb". MagEUbrueckner-automation.de Model number LMXA201L Part number107-000-706

However, when I fitted it I found that instead of a clear torch beam there was a large circle in the middle of the beam that was black making the torch useless. Is there a bulb that will present a proper beam

I thought everyone converted them to LED's? (not cheap, but as a torch come baton, some ppl prefer to keep them)

2017 video so better option maybe available

I have to ask, 30second in he focus's the torch and you get a black circle, you don't have that option on yours?

That’s what happens when you turn the head of the torch to get a ‘wide-angle’ beam, you turn it in to ‘focus’ the beam to get a bright spot in the centre - that’s always been the case with Maglights, and is the same with all flashlights with a ‘zoom’ option, which is, in my opinion completely useless. Either buy a light with a smooth flood beam, or get one with a brighter centre spot and a flood ‘halo’. I’ve got finger-sized flashlights which use a 3.7v 14500 Li-ion battery that are brighter than a 4xD-cell Maglight, and a lot easier to carry!

That's the only point of a Maglite these days though, it's 'just a torch' when you're saying a sentence which ends with the word "... officer".

I lost a bout of arm wrestling with the wife last week so I knew my grip was not what it was but your Post reminded me of the torch focus mechanism and I got a pair of grips out and found that it did address the black round bit so many thanks.
Pity replies are not automatic or have I not worked that out either?

Converted mine to LED a few weeks ago - from memory it was £7. Much whiter light and very useful to keep next to the bed as a "torch".
There appeared to be many types of LED bulb but once I checked the existing bulb it came down to a single option.

Yup, led bulb from eBay for my mini maglight. Probably wasn't financially sensible but didn't want to throw it away. Beam and burn time much better.

They're great if you don't want a bright torch. It may sound odd but if you're working in low light environments then a modern led torch is awful but an old AAA maglite gives enough light to be useful without ruining your night vision when you have to turn it off.

making the torch useless

Fixed it for you!

"Making the legally justifiable metal baton useless"

Surely, no-one has them for their light emitting ability in the days of LEDs and quality rechargeable batteries?!
