Well isn't conveyancing costly? Anyone used an online firm before? Their prices appear to be half that of the quotes I'm getting, which have been coming in at double I planned for!

I used conveyancingdirect.co.uk, there were a couple of minor issues but otherwise it seems to have gone fine.

Not true at all. I discussed it with a couple of estate agents (who don't offer the service or have links to them) and their comment was "go with the cheapest or one you've heard was good, they all have to cover the same things and do the same searches, some will just charge you more for it".

I'm using a cheapy online firm at the moment (FWD Law). They're okay, but I have to be on them all the time. Mind you, everyone I speak to says the same about their conveyancers, online/local, cheap/expensive...

I have used Roy Coles a who is just a conveyancer for 4 house moves over 20 years! - always great and much much cheaper than a solicitor -worth checking out his web site is www.roycoles.com

You get what you pay for

Well it is true in the sense that if all goes well and is easy then you're unlikely to have a problem with whoever you use but it's when things get difficult or someone is causing a hold up that a cheap conveyancer is more likely to prove less satisfactory. Mind you, for my last move I was getting quotes of around £2k from solicitors but used a solicitor I've known for years for just over 1/2 that so not sure I'd have paid £2k.
