Can people stop posting them please 🙂 I never start these debates but boy do I get tangled in them.

Has anyone ever changed their mind as a result? do any of us learn from them?

I have learnt a lot about bikes on here - but I really don't know if the arguments about social issues realy do anything at all. I have maybe learn a few bit sand perhaps gained a better apreciation of peoples ideas on things.

Well I am embarrassed to say, I have learnt that I am in fact, something of a "liberal".........I simply had no idea 😯

I've always dismissed bourgeois liberal Guardian readers. But as I have never felt the slightest inclination to string up from the nearest tree, all obese chavs who watch the X factor, I have to conclude that I must be a 'liberal'. I'm mortified .......I can tell yer 😐

Don't think I've ever changed my mind totally on a subject, but I have come to appreciate the reasons why some folk see things differently from others.

I'd prefer to debate tricky topics than not. We have different experiences and it's enlightening to share them.

I just think people need to show respect to those who holding opposing points-of-view, not say call them stupid.

"Don't think I've ever changed my mind totally on a subject,"

I used to be an atheist and a Tory. Now I'm a Christian liberal. 😀

Don't think I've really changed my mind about things, but I've definitely become a lot more broad-minded and tolerant as a result of reading other people's opinions. Chatting about controversial topics is not something I do in my daily life.
I have certainly changed my mind about my opinion of many posters though...usually for the better!! 8)

It's all pub chat, the problem with arguing on the internet is that the idiot always wins.

Not on this site, but another forum I frequent, there are some very educated people, and through discussing things with them, I've been encouraged to do some reading of my own, and changed my position on quite a few political issues.

I try to not get involved with them as there are too many people who simply aren't able to keep it pleasant & civilised
They seem to get all worked up when their POV is challenged - I blame poor education, Brown or Thatcher

Given that Allah is God who is Yaweh I think we should leave him out of the fight. Jesus vs. Abraham. vs. Mohammed vs. Buddha though...

Buddha out in the first round - he was busy fasting.
Jesus turned the other cheek - out round two.
In the final Abraham vs. Mohammed... well, Abraham was a tough ol fella, but since it's against Islamic law to depict Mohammed and you-can't-hit-what-you-can't-see, it's Cassius Clay by a knock-out.

Hardly controversial.

I'm surprised TJ can pass a mirror without getting into a 'discussion'.

The best lack all conviction, the worst are full of passionate intensity.

- seems true of this place. Some people can debate and discuss, most seem to think bile and vitriol is an argument, and just slate everyone who doesn't fall in line with their opinion as an idiot. That whole sorry helmet thread was a case in point.

I've taken part in debates on forums that have changed my mind, but never ever on STW.

"Only fools never change their minds" as the saying goes. I make an exception here. 😉

What's a controversial subject? Something where two opinions differ?

Whatever the subject, it's surely not mandatory to join in, is it?

p.s., Buddah would win with a body-slam but Jesus would forgive him. 8)

Controversy is good, and, remarkably is done with a limited amount of abuse and silliness; the helmet thread is a good example.......
