My head is spinning with what to do.
My current outside of IR35 contracts are at an end. I have been offered a very good position with good pension at my current client to come on board and really get stuck in with the place. The commute here grinds me down and so do little niggles that happen day to day around the politics of the place but I would be working remote 1 day a week. The potential for training, exposure to a varied type of work, support to be come chartered and the enjoyment of working with the people I do at the moment are very appealing.
I have just been interviewed for, and am getting very positive comments back, about a 12 month contract role in a different part of the country. The project is exciting, the partners and company running it are exciting and the location is fantastic. The pay is more than double the full time rate of the full time job but is inside IR35 and I would have to rent somewhere to live.
I have always worked for myself and have been through terrible years and great years but things are getting tougher with all the changes. I am not very familiar with what is involved with working inside IR35, I know there will be losses and changes to what I can class as expenses though.
Add to that I feel very, very selfish about abandoning my 16yr old nephew who lives with me and my partner while he does his A levels. But I can work remote some of the time and do say 3 or 4 day weeks on site with 5 when really needed and can set up video calls during the week.
Just to add I have my own business on the side developing some technology which is on hold while I build up funds through my contracting while the work is there.
IR35 just means your tax and NI is deducted by the company engaging you, just like being employed. Means you are paying taxes earlier. You'll still have your tax returns to do.

I'm a contractor currently in a within IR35 role. Each new contract/renewal reinforces the view that I'd find it very hard to go permie now. And TBH, why would you want to? Higher salary than the directors (even taking into account pension contributions), no line mgt responsibilities and no need to play politics. You need to consider which side of the fence you want to be on. Oh and job security is at an all time low.
I think your similar to me we have a place here that are always offering a perm role McLaren are now next door too...
most of my type of work is abroad or in the F1 corridor
would I take the perm job on my doorstep? nah

turn up take the money save some do your own thing
in 6-12 months I can call it a day and ride my bike live off what I have built up in terms of customers if I choose
Hey Mick,
yeah similar place to the one up your way is offering me a good perm. About as high up as one can go without stepping up to management.
Struggling with the calcs but assuming I have £10k expenses (travel, cheap flat or B&B) I would make about £20-25k a year more so not a huge amount for throwing away a full time job. Or is it £40k? I think I need to call an accountant tomorrow.
Seem to be getting stalling from the client/agency with not commitment but I need to confirm my perm role soon or piss them off.
Been doing some digging with an umbrella company (I am currently ltd) and it looks like I may not be able to claim for travel and accommodation as a business without a fight and proving not under SDC (the role is running a project)) so a role that is £67k higher ends up being about £20k split between take home and pension. Not sure it's worth the hassle and losing a good full time job for.
