We have a deep (4-6" low and 1' plus at higher level) of snow here. We have two sets of work colleagues staying overnight as they cannot get back to their houses..and I have just seen this forecast for the week ahead...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/2276?area=FK21
and
http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/10209 (see bottom of page)
A gang of us were due to go an de-ice the huge ruts and ice bumps on 7 miles of singletrack road and the private road up to the work site and colleagues houses (a mile and 800ft up a narrow, twisty lane) - could be a long day...

Coolio. I've been back in the UK since 18th Dec and have been loving all the snow that we've been getting ( though it's not been much lower than -7 here ).

True Drac. Can't have been that cold if the rivers are only just freezing over - MTFU! Took this pic 6 days ago when I was up on Speyside at my mum's:

Looks like it's staying cold for a couple more weeks though. Won't be long before we're all moaning it's too wet and windy. And then it'll be summer 🙂

Exactlty, I remember the river Wansbeck would freeze pretty much every winter when we were kids. Still not frozen.

Drac and S_F - agreed winter is cold, and I guess I am enjoying/excited by it, but even here the locals are saying this is colder than the last decade+. Our neighbour is 87 and lived here all her life and is saying it is 5years + since the snow was over knee deep in the village and 10+ since the river totally froze(as it nearly has this morning). There is also a lot of discussion that February is the coldest time of year, unusual to have had such a cold snap at Christmas/new year

I think it's just the longevity of this cold spell that makes people think it's unusually cold
A warm Atlantic depression would usually put pay to it after a few days

It's 16°C in the office today!

I'm sat here in t-shirt, shirt and hoody with just a crappy oil-filled radiator to try and keep the chill off. I think one of my toes might be rattling about loose in my shoes.

matt - yep, it's unusual I agree, going by the last 20 years or so when the trend has been for warmer winters than average. But it's only been cold for 2.5 weeks. I always take what local's say about the weather with a pinch of salt as well. Most local's or old folk remember endless summers when they were younger but the meteorological usually suggest otherwise! Rose tinted specs and all that! Winter in 1995/6 saw temps of minus 27 and snow in north east Scotland for 6 months. It melted in between falls obviously - I think uplink is spot on regarding his point about the longevity of this spell - but if this winter turns out to match that one it will have been truly baltic!

So only about 5 years ago then, not long at all. Ask her about 62 and 47.

Dropped from +2 to -6 in the space of two hours on Dartmoor this evening. Going to be a nippy night. 🙂

Hitting -10 whilst I was working in Gamesley today. De-Icer was a complete waste of time.
