pics already on classifieds thread, further pics exchanged, bit of chat, then an offer 40% below my asking price (itself 40% below RRP for 18 month old frameset)

WTF?

is it only me?

It's an offer, you can take it or leave it.

(apologies if this is a timewasting response)

Indeed but would you get into lots of chat about the item then make a crap offer with no justification?

if the guy had said "I'm offering you x because I've seen them go on ebay for y" etc then fair enough, but he literally said "I'm happy to offer you (insert crap offer here)"

Then you say "no" 5%
He/she says 35%
You say 10% etc... until you both find a price you agree on, I think it's called negotiating, but not too sure.

Ive had sellers slate me when offering 10%/15%/20% lower than their asking price
Ive also inwardly whooped when seeing said items finish a few days later on eBay for less than I offered..before fee's.

An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Sometimes its beter to tkae the money and run.

I also agree with the negotiating comment, some sellers wont even consider it.. weird

Normal negotiation doesn't start so low though. People that take the p!ss with an offer don't even get to a counter offer stage with me, so if that's what they were after then they need to think what's reasonable and not just take the mickey.

sellers are just as bad.. nice leather armchair on eblag the other week ( look loverly in my snug) starting price 100 quid. finishes mon am i'm in the area sat so offer 125 turned down flat. didnt bid on eblag didnt get an offer so went unsold so I rang up and offered 50 bit my hand off.. i had to lay out 40 quid in juice to go get the thing.. could have saved me money and done the world a bit of good too.

Got to be careful when you start these threads as they can have a nasty habit of coming back to haunt you: what if what they offered you is a fair amount?

People that take the p!ss with an offer don't even get to a counter offer stage with me, so if that's what they were after then they need to think what's reasonable and not just take the mickey

+1 although only if what you're asking is a fair price in the first place

are you 100% certain you arent asking too much?

60% of RRP ( not of cheapest available price) sounds too much to me for an 18 month old frame but I can't see the add to see if its available discounted

Nice frame, and the disc mounts do look nicely done. If I was about to drop money on a new one I would consider Al's one instead. Not sure I would be fussed either way about the addition of disc mounts, but that's just me.

But to be devil's advocate.... (Or just what Al might say of it wasn't his thread....)
The 2011 frameset is £400, obviously with a warranty. Don't we often see £400 frames a couple of years old going for £160ish on the classifieds in these hard times?

Perhaps your buyer was hoping you would haggle him/her back up to £160 or so, but has rather alarming way of haggling.

Yeah that is a nice looking frame actually. Cant work out the sizing though relative to the spec sheet.

I just take any offer in the mix. Difficult to assess the value of used bike bits really, I guess its what people are willing to pay. £150-200 is probably not too far off its value. I sold an old Syncros post on retrobike recently for £45 and a Terrys clip (little thing for holding a stopwatch) on ebay for £26. WTF!! Where is the sense in that!!

Depends how much you want to keep it!!

NB Salsa stuff is pretty expensive relatively so maybe more so to a second hand buyer?

Oh, got my sums wrong up there. So buyer offered you £180ish. I expect they planned to be haggled back up to £210ish for a 2 year old £[s]400[/s]450 frameset then. Is it me or does that not sound so bad?

[edit] crossed posts. It looks pretty easy to come by one at £50 off rrp though.

Sympathies Al. There are still some decent people on the classifieds but an awful lot of people who don't seem to understand the basic principals of buying and selling and even common courtesy.

I'm at the point where I've got more faith in fleabay and that's a damning indictment on how some people treat the classifieds.

Oh and the current RRP is £449

the current rrp of SLX cranks is £160 but they are £120 new at merlin I bought mine new for £70 so i assume £80 seems fair then?
There are occasional adverts for folk selling stuff for more than it cost them 2-4 years ago.
Assume it has not be "adapted" by you seem a reasonable opening gambit

Not much of a haggler here, but I have had a couple of frames and a bike from classifieds here for way less than 50% rrp. To put it into perspective, the last one i bought (a yeti and all!) was 2006 not 2009 granted, but absolutely mint and cost me maybe 30% of original rrp. I think I got a tenner off the buyer's asking price and a discount on seatpost he was selling in same ad.

Modifications never add value, even when they're good ones like this. Best you can hope is to find someone for whom it doesn't take value away usually. Also you seem to have been trying to sell it for at least 2 months, and increased the price since last time? That's not a strong selling position. At the end of the day, the buyer's asked for more info, and he's offered you what he thinks it's worth. It's less than you think it's worth but then, you can't sell it for that so far.

And yeah, only takes 2 seconds to find a brand new one for £405 (avoiding the almighty c*** Mark Anthony) , with front rack, stem and Salsa clamp included.

You offered something for sale, someone made an offer.

If you don't like it say no, thankyou. They may even make another offer, but nothing has been lost by being polite.

What's your point again 😯 ?

Just thinking out loud here;
normal guestimate for second hand is 50% less retail minus 10% per year - so that's £200 minus 2 years for a 2009 frameset (if you discount that 2012 frames are starting to come out now) which works out at £120. Plus this is for a non-standard frame that you have altered (so will be a niche product).
And your complaining about being offered £160?

I'm another that goes for the 50% of new price, then more off for each year.
So my Nicolai Argon cost £1350 with all the custom bits, three years old and sold it for £350.
It's just old metal, there not works of art.

i'd hate to think what you were like when you didn't get you own way as a kid, tantrums in the supermarket?

if you don't get an offer you like, don't accept it, get left with frame. it's not rocket science, what is sad though is posting about how hard done by you are on the internet just because you can't get what you want

thats not hating, its pity

TBH When I saw the ad first of all, I thought Oh nice frame but then read about the "added disc mounts", thought of the recently much publicised home bodge attempts, which have appeared on here, and didn't look any further. Maybe some photos in the ad would have helped. It actually looks a lot nicer than the description. Trouble is that this thread and the reactions on it aren't likely to make people want to buy it any more.

Note sure I've seen any haters (I can't use 'haterz' as I'm not 12) on this thread. Mostly people are offering decent advice. You seem to be surprised and supset that anyone would offer you a price lower that what you consider fair.

If that's the case, you really shouldn't be selling in the secondhand market. People offer what they want, and justify that price to themselves, not to you.

From the opposite side, I see people advertising things on here at ludicrously inflated prices. Every so often I'll make what I conder to be a fair offer and be given short shrift, other times people will take my offer, but usually it ends up somewhere between. That said, I never try and chip people further - cash in their acount immediately, never a quibble with paying courier charges, and the deal's concluded very quickly.

In your case, I'd say the offer the chap made to you was around fair, maybe £20 light.

IF I was the guy I'd retract my offer and make a much lower one, seems like you haven't got any buyers other than him so it obviously isn't worth what you thought.

TBH if someone make's me a low offer I might think I need to educate them in the value of my product as they may well end up being the buyer. I tend to offer a polite decline and a helpful push in the right direction. It does not pay to alienate your customers. Or revise my expectations accordingly.

Sorry, late to the party. I was just thinking, time wasters?

"I want £400 for this."

"Hey, I'll give you £140."

"No, you're alright."

Not exactly haemorrhaging hours there, are we? Ok, they might well be taking the proverbial but there again they might just be chancing their arm in the hope that you really want rid of it and have had no other takers.

I bought a road stem a few years ago for £150, it felt like the wrong size so I bought another to compare. When I finally decided which length to go to it was a bit late to return it so I advertised it on the classifieds. No-one was interested here so I Ebayed it. RRP by then was close to £200, it went for £45 and the guy still complained that the postage was too high!

Needless to say I was gutted but that was it's market value, if it wasn't sold it would still be unused in my garage.

If I'm buying, i always offer less than asking price, sometimes cheekily low, but if its something I really want and its popular I might cut to the chase and offer the asking price. If I'm selling, I always advertise at more that I'd expect it to go for. I expect to haggle. Its what the second-hand market is all about.

Sometimes you get a bargain, sometimes you don't.

My biggest problem is the people who say they definitely want something and can you hold it until they can collect. They then leave you hanging with no communication and either change their minds (but don't tell you until you chase them) or get the hump when you sell it to someone else a couple of weeks later having heard nothing from them.

Stick to your guns al. I got flamed by the usual suspects for trying to sell a jacket on here for what I bought it for. It sold for what I was asking.

Unusual case through, I usually deeply discount just to get rid of stuff.

Whatever you do, don't go to a car boot sale. The offers people make there will have you spinning on your ass like a baboon with itchy butt grapes.

I make low offers because I want to spend as little money as possible. If it isn't enough tell me what would be and mayeb we'll come to a figure. If not no worries.

Life is too short to fret about this sh!te.

Basically in my opinion email/classifieds/textual communication is an incredibly useless medium for negotiations. Any quick fire offers are laboured over, any thought out sensible final offers can be taken as initial markers etc

OP. Not a timewaster, possibly an opportunist. No harm in trying. Barter is healthy. How good would it be to barter for everything we buy. Far more fun, far more fair.

Had a good one this week. Guy texting me and mailing me wants my frame and bits etc. I say is bank transfer ok. He says he's done it after I mail him twice and text with no answer. Then out of the blue I get a mail 10 hours later saying 'the money would probably be in my account Tuesday' his bank said. I smelled a rat because normally if people stick 200 quid in your bank account they tell you soon as they have done it and give you the postal address so you can post ASAP on cleared funds. They don't have to wait for you to ask them if they have paid the money in!

Also when I checked what he had been posting on the forums the same guy was buying the same sort of stuff what he had arranged to buy from me! I kind of knew that was it. The thing that got me mad though was I lost some sales for the stuff as I told the other partys the items were sold. What a total prick. A good time to come clean as a messer would be the time I asked him if the money had been paid in my account. Why do that though? Anyway I have mailed him and texted him but no answer! suprise

Time wasting of the highest order Not to mention if I had stripped the complete bike down and boxed it up. Lucky I didn't!
