evening all,
just a quick heads up for anyone posting in the wanted ad section of the forum. There are currently 'scumbags' sifting through the ads and trying to steal your hard earned honest cash!

I posted an ad a few days ago wanting a set of sram cranks for my roadie and was contacted by someone by email claiming he had exactly what i was looking for.
I was suspicious from the start because of his poor English (not meaning to discriminate) and realized early on it was too good to be true so played along with it for a while to see what he said and to get him to send me some photos.

Finally today after doing some googling i found the 3 pictures he sent me on the USA ebay. He had even gone to the lengths of mirroring some of the photos!!

Please bear this in mind and be careful! never ever BT any money without protection from paypal and if it seems to good to be true it is! We dont want to be loosing our hard earned honest cash to the pits of society. I feel like a bit of a fool that i believed him in the first place.

All the best, Nick

Heres how the conversation went, hopefully it'll help anyone posting wanted ads to be carefull...

Looks like it.

Unfortunately my pp has reached currently its temporarily limitation for accepting funds from a fullsuspension bike I sold last month.
I could accept BT - takes normaly only 1 day to process.
You would be provided all of my convenient account details.

The more publicity it gets the better so two threads isn't a problem, imo.

That's not very nice. He's gone to the trouble to obfuscate and post his exchange to warn others.

I know, Bear. Just that I still find it funny when people who only use the classifieds pop up here.

And thanks very much, i really should post in the rest of the forum more aha. I'm just posting this as the classifieds section is a fantastic recourse and i want to keep it that way. Without it i wouldn't have half the gear i do today 🙂

I see they are using a new trick now. i.e. PP has reached limits ...

Not suggesting we do it here in public but those folks who have actually been scammed, is it worth sharing the details you have to try to find out where he really is and passing details on? For example, have you all transferred money to the same account?

Not so common but still OK.

Sorry I have no sympathy for those not using some common sense.
Having said that, it's good that these scum are found out.

Who knows how I sell stuff then 😉

the pay half now and half on collection is a neat trick as you can see how its tempting.

How about a bit of direct action? Post up the name, contact and bank account details of these scammers on here and every other site you visit .And then exhort you righteous forum colleagues to pass them on to to all of the bank/lottery winner/adult "entertainment"/viagra/penis enlargement/Russian/Thai wives/ gambling/Nigerian/Western Union scam(other nationalities are available) spammers you get.Hit them where it hurts.

+1 Nick, there's no nobility or ethical righteousness for not hanging these scumbags out to dry. Just post all info up and a cut and paste to the other forums. Spread the word.

Unfortunately seems i've been suckered in too by this fella too. Follishily transferred money to a dutch bank account (have the details) after posting a 'wanted' ad in the classifieds. Seems to good to be true, it often is.

Have his bank account details and email address. Will try and trace his IP.
