I'm after some bits for a road bike; these two chaps keep offering me them. Something doesn't sit right. Apologies if you're legit.

I've not found anything, but my gut instinct is they're not legit, so I'm not gonna buy anything from them.

Do they accept PayPal Gift?

Let's hope so; it's the thinking man's method of payment; no fees!

Nope, even searching that name via Google throws up nothing at all.

Hmmm.....

http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/wtd-ipod-nano-6

Contacted (as requested) by email, offering me a new boxed 7gen one, unwanted gift.

I told him I probably couldn't afford a new one but he said make an offer anyway. I offered £70, he said he'd take £60. Bell 1.

I agreed, asked for Paypal address. Rest of the email exchange as follows (bottom up):

As you didn't respond to my post on STW, could you give me some reference to who you are on there, so i can make some checks. i apologise if this sounds harsh but i have seen a few people ripped off on this sort of transaction, I'm sure you can understand.

Thanks

Jon

Hi

Have had already onces increased, talked with pp and they said I must wait for 6 months cause
of claimed EU regulations.
Optionally in case of bt you would have provided all of my personal data that way you have my full
legit reference.
Come back with your decision.

cheers,

Regards.
Martin

There's no rush, it's for a birthday present and not needed until later this month. TBH i would prefer to use Paypal for the protection it offers us both, so happy to wait until the limit is removed. I'm happy to cover the fees myself, if that's an issue.

It's not normally a big issue to get the fund limit increased / removed though.

If it looks too good to be true and / or dodgy, it probably is.
Walk away or scam them!

Difficult with folk responding to wanted ads, because he's clearly not actually a member on here.

I'm just preparing a shitty stick to never touch anything he offers with.

At what point would police be interested? Worth getting Bank details and then passing on. I suppose until I've paid and not received my ipod [or got my box of stones] no crime is committed, or is attempted robbery interesting?

It's not even that though is it, that you can prove anyway. He's done nothing wrong at the moment.

So, he's finally linked me to the profile of his elusive friend ericbmc. Which has no posting history, and was set up.....yesterday.

Claims to be in Edinburgh.

Worst scammer ever.

Reporting to mods.

Cheated by Martin Bergersen - martinostbon@gmail.com
Is this the same person as You are debating ?

In this case he told that he was living north of Copenhagen in Denmark.

I have paid for a Garmin GPS on 18th. January, and was informed from Martin, that pacel was dispatched. I never recieved it, and by his choise he shipped it without insurence and trace.
I am currently facing a 130 euro loss.

Would be interested to know if it's the same guy.

bugger.

I've done that often enough, often with very little checking.

On the whole, I think I'd rather go through life thinking the best of people and getting caught out occasionally than distrusting everyone I deal with.

I'd rather not give my money to scammers, it's not distrusting people it's just looking out for yourself. As they say nothing to hide no issues.
Edit
Any chance of some massive sidebar ads in the Classifieds saying PP Gift is a SCAM, don't bank transfer to strangers.

There's a sticky. If people are happy to take the risk then it'll happen from time to time. I'd also rather think the best of people in the main. Have to say I'd be naturally suspicious of anyone on the classifieds I don't 'know' from the forum, and respondents to wanted ads even moreso.

Yes, that's the guy. Martin Ostbon, Martin Bergersen, Eric Stensfold.....

I was nearly in until I suggested the max I'd be able to stretch to, and he countered with a tenner LESS than that. At first I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough, thinking I'd got an easy win, but a bell was ringing. the bullshine about paypal limits and needing 6 months for EU regs then just got funny. Was that his MO for others, offering at vastly reduced prices?

I told him to stuff it last night, he became mildly abusive, now he's blocked on my email. i also reported to the mods but so far his (newly set up) profile is still active.

http://singletrackworld.com/forum/profile/ericbmc

If you have his bank details, as that seems to be his preferred method, can he be traced from that?

Pretty much Jon - he offered me a phone for £145 which I declined and then he dropped the price to £95 which should have alerted me to a scam but I was suckered in.

Not sure how useful his bank details are if he's outside the UK?

Maybe the Danish police take this more seriously than the British seem to at times (based on what people on here have said, as opposed to any first hand experience, I might add)

I can't imagine that STW is his only scam site.

Have also posted a BEWARE on the WTD ads, up to mods if they want to sticky it for a bit, or write their own, either way it'll be on the page for a while.

Posted this in the sticky thread by accident;

Yeah I wasted ages chatting to both Eric and Martin..over ultegra chainsets.

To be fair he chose very different teeth numbers, so he did his research.

Both wouldn't accept paypal, so I walked!

Eric Stensflod........Mar 3 (1 day ago)
to me
Hi

Not a problem.
Unfortunately my pp has reached currently its temporarily limitation for funds from a bike I sold last month.
The crank comes with BB.
I could accept BT - takes only 1-2 days to process.

Let me noticed back.

Regards

Eric S

after stating he didn't have paypal and so I refused to do a bank transfer:

Martin Bergersen ....9:09 PM (15 hours ago)
to me
Alternatively we could split the payment into two amounts, with the rest after receipt.

As a last chance.

Regards.

I've been scammed out of quite a big chunk of money by Martin as well. Financially it's a problem, but even worse is how utterly bloody stupid I feel.

Not all users who ask for "paypal gift" are scammers but it does pay to check their history of all users before entering into a classifieds deal with them, I always ask for paypal gift if i'm selling, or you can pay the extra fees.

So if anyone else (like me) was dumb enough to get their money stolen - or perhaps even if you just got close - please can you report it on?

http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/

Maybe if enough people do the police might pursue it...

How about a bit of direct action? Post up the name, contact and bank account details of these scammers on here and every other site you visit .And then exhort you righteous forum colleagues to pass them on to to all of the bank/lottery winner/adult "entertainment"/viagra/penis enlargement/Russian/Thai wives/ gambling/Nigerian/Western Union scam(other nationalities are available) spammers you get.Hit them where it hurts.
