So I have had several of these things telling me about their last year, some stuck in Christmas cards, some via email. All with photos of their latest child/grandchild/holiday/new house/new car etc etc

Anyone else do them or is it a cheesey american thing? I like keeping up to date with what people have been up to but some of these things just scream "look at me, look at me". perhaps its me, perhaps I am jealous of their lives after having a not so great year?

My brother does this. It goes straight into the trash folder...

I mean, isn't that nonsense what Facebook is for?

I think communicating with people has been around for awhile, I may be wrong though.

Yeah Drac, it has. So why resort to a crap 'newsletter' once a year?

(hmm, looks like Drac is a newsletter writer. Takes note for future reference...)

It's the end of the year people use it to catch up with what's happened. I'm not one no but when people send them I don't get all confused as to why they're sending a letter.

it's definitely not American at least not in origin though I think they're popularising it. the British expat community love them ime.

A few Christmas's ago my cousin and his Californian wife give me a CD with pics, mostly of their tiny dog, and ... MP3s of them singing. Bin

If they're like that I can see why they may be annoying. We get them only now and then, the wife reads them and tells me the highlights. She loves gossip like that for some reason which is beyond me.

I believe that writing cards that contain messages (rather than trite pish generated by the Hallmark computer) is an old tradition going back many years. People who have friends a long way away often do this as they can't pop over for a coffee and catch up.

If you dislike hearing their news so much, perhaps you should stop sending them cards and make your feelings known to them with a sharply written email. Or get over yourself.

You mean I have friends and family who can write? Or that we don't all live on the same sink estate and drink together 4 nights a week so share our news that way?

Are you planning on using this List for your own regular newsletter?

TT, that's a marvellous idea.

I'll starting taking photos of small dogs and recording them mp3's.

Please add your email addresses below....

wifes chum sends us one every year 🙄

Think she does it to inform us of how dull our lives are.

Used to get one many years ago, so not that new. It came across as very shallow to me. Was a load of total crap that this couple felt people needed to know. They made a lot of references to playing "badders" so that should give you some idea what this couple were like. And they ate hummus.
