Company has done some testing for us all and i found out my cholesterol levels were higher that than it ought to be. Very annoying as i bike home 25k daily and very hilly eat no fatty stuff, love porridge. Etc. So now it is Benecol for tea....

Not just outright levels that count but ratios. Benecol costs a blerdy fortune, tescos own yoghurts drinks for me 😆

There is alo a GP test that looks at chol in relation to other risk factors, worth getting that done as well.

Cholesterol levels vary wildly and are genetic.

I have high cholesterol regardless of diet or exercise. If I diet strictly I can manage to get it down to 'guideline levels' but it means I have virtually no 'good' cholesterol left! The 'bad' cholesterol remains almost unchanged.

I'm now on statins to get ride of the 'bad' cholesterol.

Caher, what is your cholesterol level ?

As other people have said, it may not be a case of just changing your diet, that will help, rather depends what you eat now.

The experts I have spoken to have explained you would need to consume a lot of Benecol type product to have any real effect. It's 9 months ago so I can't remember the figures.

I bike home only as i put the bike on the train on the way in. Live in Switzerland so they have vast carriages for bike here.
Agree with mk1fan mine seems to be like that. It is probably inherited too as my mother has it.
The reality is Benecol will not get it down – it is now pills.

I would avoid the statins like the plague unless you have a family history of heart issues. imho

My family is the history of heart issues.

To be fair I don't appear to be having any side effects from the statins and my cholesterol has dropped 2.5 points so far.

Apparently it is high cholestrol and stress that is the problem - high cholestrol in women didn't used to matter so much but it does more now a women have careers simialr to men.

that's what I read, anyway.

Don't worry about it.

We all have a number and when it's up, it's up.

My cholesterol number has gone down a bit after a few lifestyle changes (more bike riding, less saturated fat, benecol).

Benecol is expensive for a margerine but about half the price of a prescription and it lasts me about a month per tub. Silly not to really.

Try this. See if it help you.

Edit:

Interesting note is that many Okinawans have elevated cholesterol levels, yet Okinawa has one of the highest concentrations of centenarians anywhere.

The problem with getting your cholesterol measured is that usually it doesn't get measured until you're in the "at risk" age range for heart disease and strokes.

There is nothing to compare it to. It is possible that your cholesterol has always been at the same level. i.e. it's the natural level for your body.

I'm nowhere near qualified to judge these things but I'm a little sceptical about the recent statin pushing that is going on.
