aye up, . . . off to Chester for a night on Saturday.

Any decent Restaurant recommendations, no chinese/thai/indian/italian, but anything else considered.

and on the night, where should a young at heart couple be headed for a few cocktails?

Cocktails at Oddfellows on Lower Bridge Street - can get loud later on (22:00 +). They do food there as well and is very nice.
Drinks also at Barlounge on Lower Watergate Street and if you like steak then walk across the road toUpstairs at the Grill. Small but very nice.
Had a number of good meals at Piccolinos as well .

You're about 15 years too late, Claverton's rocked on a Saturday night.
Food and beer can be found in http://www.telfordswarehousechester.com/,often with live music but possibly a bit studenty.
old harkers arms used to serve a decent pint.
Wtaergates used to do a good bit of grub.

+1 for sharkbaits recommendations (other than Piccolinos which is Italian so off your list), we visit the racecourse restaurant (1539) a lot and the food is great, not too expensive (although the service is either brilliant or haphazard with no in between!) The Ship Inn just over the the weir is excellent for a beer/cocktail before you stroll 500m up to Oddfellows, or 600m along the river to Hickory's. If you feel like splashing out Abode is top class as is Joseph Benjamins, if you stay in the 'lower' end of town toward the river you'll avoid the sticky carpet cheap beer and a fight type of pubs.

Fixed that for you DS

Doh, forgot 1539. Not eaten there yet but heard good things. And yes the ship is nice too - more pub atmosphere if you know what I mean.
Eaten at Abode once..... was OK but dooubt I'll be going back (partly because the service was pretty poor, and also partly because they left the bookings PC unsupervised and I 'may' have opened up red***e.com as we left 😈 )

OK, I'll go 20-25, now I feel old. It must be getting on for 20 years since I worked there. Steve Crossland ring a bell?

Check out Alexanders Jazz bar for some comedy on a Saturday

The Continental Hotel is a good place to chill out, if you can find it - up Northgate street from the cross and turn left up an alley past the building society.

Thumbs up for the food in Oddfellows, although it's pricey and the service was a bit haphazard mid week a few weeks back.

A few at work went to the Hickorys smokehouse last week, all said it was excellent. Also Tropeiros is very good (brazilion steakhouse) and Upstairs at the grill, (for steaks).

Lees lager was pish, now the bitter was something else.
Uninteresting fact , the Ridley and Newton boardroom in Coronation St was the boardroom of JW Lees.
Can you remember the name of the really strong stuff that was poured from the barrel in the cellar?

Marmoset, do you mean 'the commercial' not 'the continental'? It's nice to chill there.

The recently opened 'mad hatters' does amazing eggs benedict for breakfast, thier array of cakes is delightful too. It's on the rows opposite 'slug and lettece'.

If you do decide on somewere like 'la tasca' check out martin lewis website (money saving expert) as they have good offers if you print the voucher out, probably don't apply at weekends sadly.

Harkers is nice for a pint, it's a haunt of mine. Can be full of suits after 5pm on a Friday though. The new bike friendly seats outside are good if your doing the canal cycle.

I don't find Telfords as studenty as it was, nice food for the money and they stock some nice cigars too!

What was your vintage?
I worked there approx 20-25 years ago under Steve and a short period with Tony, then left and continued drinking there until the enforced change and moved to the Bear & Billet up until about 1999/2000.
Or are you from and older vintage and "The Clockwork Orange"?

when i was working at Shotton beginning last year took the SO out to Chez Jules, seemed ok. Telfords was OK, atmosphere depended on which day of the week.

@mrmo so you didn't treat her to the delights of the Clwyd then?

I have vague recollections of downing plenty of Moonraker in Clavertons and loosing a big part of that night 🙂

it was bad enough venturing to Asda in Queensferry in daylight let alone trying to go some where of an evening!

Upstairs at the Grill does a truly awesome steak in my experience, stunning wine list too. (or is it downstairs at the grill)

Yep , oops meant the Commercial - should remember that as my Great Gran used to be the landlady in the 1910's I think

Clavertons - what a sweaty smokehole that place was, but it was the first place to go into to get an idea about who was out....
