whats good?

needs to be proper cheap, cos we're students...

well under £100 please!

(and yes, a map would be a good consideration were it not for my GF getting super stressed when driving alone, and my inability to read maps anyway...(and don't tell me to learn to read a map please 😉 )

How about your mobile phones? Does it have any maps/apps for GPS?

Halfrauds are doing Garmins for about £100

picked up one of the ebuyer ones (Sat Nav V2) from Wh Smiths for £45 notes a couple o fmonths ago - ok as is, but extremely hackable if you do some googling - got tomtom mapping installed on 1 SD card for road journeys and also had a go with Memory Map for OS maps.

Well worth the dosh imho if you change the system - only critisism is battery life, but in a car you have power supply anyway

What he means is that you can hack the unit yourself, to gain access to the embedded Windows OS. Once you've done that, you can install any apps you like - like Memory Map etc. If you're not too savvy it's probably best avoided, as you could end up with an expensive paperweight 🙂

to the OP - woody has it right. Basically, the unit I bought came with the mapping software and maps loaded onto an SD card (like for a camera) - took this out, replaced it with the tomtom maps (following some very simple instructions on how to do it) and hey presto. Its as easy as that. Not a particularamount of danger to the Nav unit as everything is done on the SD card - get it wrong and it wont load the software when you turn it on (and you just reformat the card and try again)

Dont know if THESE are any good, but I'm always overhearing a couple of blokes at waffling on about Tom Tom's & how their lives have changed for the better etc etc...zzzzz.

Hacked ebuyer sat-nav Memory Map goodness:

[img] [/img]

It's a bit basic as an actual satnav, but it does the trick, and having Memory Map on it is ace.

If you just want simplicity and accuracy then I second the TomTom One.
Best selling sat nav for a reason.

I use one called "Sean" who speaks to me in Irish. He's a tomtom. We've also got one at home called Julie who is also a tomtom.

Rosie uses a really stern sounding one called Judith. She's also a tomtom.

tomtoms is good tom.

hungrymonkey, the techies are advising that you can replace the road maps on the Navigo with OS maps. Not so your gf can drive her car on bridle ways, but so you can use it for mountainbiking. The maps on car satnavs are just road maps. Presumably Garmin and Tomtoms aren't hackable, so more limited in the long run. But if you just want one for the car then Navigos are cheap.
