We've always gone to Ikea and been happy, but my 11yo daughter's new bed needs a 75cm one and Ikea don't do them. It seems like mattresses are rip-off territory, with wild claims and the option to spend large sums. I could get something comfortable in Ikea for say £150, if they had the right size, but this seems to represent the very cheapest option in actual bed shops. Having slept on some awful mattresses in my lifetime particularly as a student, is this what I'd be buying at that price?

Emma got anything in that size?

They always seem to have a sale on and the web is full of discount codes.

From memory, don't Ikea do 80cm children's bed mattresses, rather than the normal 90cm width?

Would you not be able to cram in the extra 5cm?

Apparently not.

Doesn't look like it although the bed hasn't been assembled yet.

Is this one of those situations where there are limited options in a 'small single' so you pay a premium for them?

A standard single is 3', while a small single is 2'6".
Looking on the Dreams website, there are lots more options for the standard single size, with 6 available under £150 and 12 available under £200.
Not that I'm saying Dreams is the place to go; it was just the first place I looked & there are plenty of showrooms around so easy to go and lay on a few.

We bought an Ikea Malfors foam one and chopped it down to size. Very easy with one of those snap-off blade knives that extend quite long with a fresh blade.

We would have preferred a pocket sprung one, but it's actually very comfy.
We've now used them throughout our 4-berth campervan too (they all needed chopping for that).

We went with the medium-firm option.

BTW - initially we didn't modify the zipped cover and it was fine just tucked in, but when we did the van ones, we went back and did the cover for the house one too - just a bit neater and easier when changing the bedding.

I bought the cheapest memory foam mattress Dreams had for my spare room, 7 years ago, so I don't remember how much it was. My son still sleeps on it, my mate sleeps on it, it's fine. Kid was 11 when I got it, so was a lot lighter than he is now, but he's never complained about the mattress.
I'll get a cheap one when I replace it, there are loads of offers on the web.

Yeah we shortened some cheap Ikea ones for the bunk bed which we'd shortened. Not too bad, it's an option.

the bed hasn’t been assembled

Flippant answer...

Return the bed and get something with a regular size mattres?

Or,as mentioned above, if getting a foam mattress from IKEA then a little trimming of innards and re-sewing?

Cheap means different things to different people. I'd think nothing of dropping $400k on a mattress.

Last year I came home to a sudden immediate need to replace my mattress (.... Cheers dog....) and drove over to Argos and got the cheapest one they had so we'd have something to sleep on that night!

Thought it would just be a stopgap solution but .... We're fine (and mid-50s so not without our share of aches and pains).

I know it's an individual thing but my default assumption would be a kid could sleep on even the cheapest mattress.
