Wifes phone speaker/ear piece has died
my headphone jack has died.
They are both 2 year old full fat motorola G6s
what to replace them with today ? g7 ? g8 ? something else all together ?
Doesnt need to do anything fancy - just last and not be slow as shit.
Was hoping to keep it to sub ~150 each - sim free. - we are not unlocking or flashing phone - too old for that shit now.
see the G7 play for £99 and the g7 power for £139
Any suggestions ?
Haven't got one but the realme 5 is on my list for next phone.
I've got the Moto g7. Quite happy with it although they cut some corners on the UK / European version i.e. no magnetometer (compass) or 5ghz WiFi. Was going to just get the Play as it is a cracking spec for £99 but the large battery on the Power swayed it for me.
Two pairs of bluetooth headphones?
If I were buying a new phone tomorrow it'd be something on the Android One programme. https://www.android.com/intl/en_uk/one/
Whatever you do go for the newest possible. Makes me sound like a paranoid crazy person but the longer you get the updates for the better. Anything with Android One as the system should be fine as that will get updates for longer and be on the latest greatest versions.
Nokia 3.2 for £88: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nokia-Android-Sim-Free-Smartphone-Storage-Black/dp/B07R11B3DC/ref=asc_df_B07R11B3DC/?
I recently bought 50 of these for use at my work and seriously impressed with them. I'm used to iOS and personal mobile is a 3yr old iPhone 8, but if/when it dies I'd seriously consider one of the Nokia Android One handsets.
Wife has the g7 power. 2 year warranty from John Lewis. Same price as online. Battery lasts ages. Does all the other stuff ok. It is pretty big though
aye not sure the wifes gonna go for the bluetooth headphone option. - phone rings get headphones out , pair to phone , answer phone
those 3.2s look like a bargain - but if they did them with a bit more memory that would be nice. like not loads more a 32 would be good. I keep most stuff on an SD card but 16 feels like id be stepping back in time and be constantly moving stuff about
theres motorola one macros direct from motorola for 159.99
whats so special about the "android one" platform ?

No bloatware, guaranteed OS updates. Read the link I posted.
@trail_rat, there'a 32GB version but not as readily available. Nokia 3.2 has a micro SD card slot. No fingerprinter reader is the only downside. Screen would be too big for me if I was considering one as a personal mobile replacement, but they're ideal for work purposes.
I have a G7 Power and it's excellent.
Goes two days between charges. Excellent camera. Lack of magnetometer is annoying with Google Skymap but that's it. Happily buy another.
I got a Xiaomi Mi A2 a couple of weeks ago, very impressed (no, I don't know how to pronaunce it either...) Was 95 quid for a 128gb phone.

Android One phones will receive at least two years of OS upgrades
2 years? Wow. *Slow clap*
If I was getting an Android I’d get a One phone too.
I’m a recent Apple convert, the thing that finally got me to switch was the lack / short lifespan of updates.
I got a 4 year old Google Pixel in very nice condition off ebay for £95 recently. Flashed Lineage OS (oh you don't want that), with one of the smaller Google apps packages. Was easy to flash especially compared to Samsungs. Decent phone, "upgraded" from EE £16 pcm contract to giffgaff £6 pcm no contract.
My G6 still flys. Have you tried a factory reset?

"Chow Me"
I'm looking at these too. A mate just bought a Redme and its a pretty awesome piece of kit for the money. Waiting for the apple "SE2" release first though, as I like the small form fact of the iPhone 8 I have for work, yet with iPhone 11 internals at the right price it could be pretty good as the rest of the family are Apple.
I've seen a few phones like that G7 with the fingerprint reader on the back; how does that work? Do you not use the fingerprint reader to unlock the screen any more? Or can you just not use it on a desk without picking it up first?
I've just bought a Redmi Note 8T for £170. Because my Moto G5 died quite spectacularly yesterday, with smoke pouring out of it as it tried to set fire to my desk.

Swings and roundabouts. Its much easier to use when you pick it up. The fingerprint reader is exactly where your finger naturally sits as you hold it so it is unlocked effectively automatically as you grab it. It would be trickier to unlock it without picking it up but I don't do that. You can read notifications without unlocking it just by tapping it anywhere to wake the screen (if you allow it) and to do anything else I'd probably pick it up anyway.

When you're starting from "one year, maybe, if you're lucky" then two years is good.
Back to the original point, there's a Huawei available for ~£100 that the reviews tend to say kicks well above it's price point.
I've got a Mi 8 Pro (Xiaomi) which has been really good, except the USB-C port has become quote baggy now, which is irritating. That was about £400 just over a year ago for the bigger (8gb/128gb) version, but seen them for £250 recently (it's still £400 in 'normal' outlets!). Got facial recognition and on screen finger print scanner, dual Sim, very fast, blah, blah, blah.
But also got my other half a Huawei P-Smart when whatever Samsung she had died - £150 and it's really quite good. It's not got huge memory (3GB/64GB) but is solid and pretty quick. Dual sim too. Seen these recently for £129.

G6 has facial recognition - unless you have manual locked it....
i rarely use my thumb to unlock it. surely the g7 has a better version of that

The latter. My Nokia has it, it's a bit crap if I'm honest. It's handy for things like not needing a password to access my bank app or LastPass, but generally faster to unlock the phone just using a traditional PIN / pattern.

Sounds like you are doing it wrong. I take my phone out of my pocket, finger naturally lands on the sensor (or close enough that I can feel it) and by the time I'm looking at it it'll be unlocked.

You just reminded me that mine had become like this; cables just fell out with ease which was a pain. The internet however suggested having a quick furtle in the hole with a pin or something; even though I couldn't see anything obvious a huge amount of fluff and rubbish came out, and now it's like new!
Usb-c evidently has a fluff attracting problem.
