ted (the rider) has lost his bike having left it somewhere while pissed.
maybe STW'eres would like to help find it? it's in east London somewhere so maybe rudeboy will keep an eye out for it while he's pavement riding?

Oops - missed yesterdays thread.

Maybe Ted is a decent bloke but IMO adult males with beards on bikes should be in the woods or up a mountain somewhere, not pi$$ing off pedestrians like a 5 years old 😯

Right - if you skid on a fixie, doesn't that mean you'll always be skidding on the same spot on the tyre and would then wear through it really quickly and blow the tyre?

Depends what gearing he's running - different ratios have different ops for patches of the tyre you'll skid on e.g. 46:17 has 17 skid patches, so prob. won't blowout for a while.

if you ride with a front brake and don't skid for 'fun' you are less likely to lock your rear tyre up than with a brake.
all the time your pedals are moving the rear isn't going to lock so it's easy to slow down without skidding. modulating the rear brake by hand without skidding is harder than doing it fixed (IME as i ride both fixed and geared)

I dun this wun a few weeks ago. And got a load of flak because some of us went on an urban pootle, and may have ridden on one or two pavements...

It seems Karma has struck, although it's a shame for the bloke to lose his bike. If I do see it, I would do what I could to recover it for the bloke, like I would with anyone's bike that got nicked.

But I would have a word with him about his selfish behaviour.

And respray the hideous thing black, before returning it.

And fit brakes.

And a freewheel.

Perhaps, but I was commenting on the mechanics of a fixed skid, not whether or not fixed was better 🙂 In any case I don't lock up my back wheel unless I want to with brakes, since I tend to know my traction.
