We have a squirrel that visits our loft 3 or 4 times a week at about 4am AND MAKES A RIGHT BLOODY RACKET. We need to be rid of it because the sleep depravation is sending me and the missus psychotic and before it chews through a cable.

Unfortunately the design of our house roof is such that there is no access to some of the area that it has been getting into. The Verminator from the council came round to have a look this morning and said that he can’t help because they would need to retrieve the body of the squirrel and any unconsumed poison. So, he can’t just lob lethal chemicals into the inaccessible areas and they can’t put it down in the accessible area in case the squirrel consumes it then chooses to expire somewhere from where its cold dead stiff corpse can’t be retrieved.

I am therefore going to have to catch the little sod with a trap... Which brings me onto the question of what I should bait it with.

Any suggestions, serious or otherwise?

I know that squirrels like solving puzzles, so I was thinking of trying to tempt it with a jigsaw and a Rubic Cube.

It takes a squirrel to catch a squirrel (to paraphrase) so...

We think it is getting in elsewhere in the row of cottages and running from loft to loft. The Verminator had a look outside and couldn't see any obvious signs of entry on our property.

They can bite through most stuff, we solved this by getting some galvanised mesh ( example), rolling it into a TIGHT ball, stuffing it into the hole the furry b'stard was using and filling the mesh ball/hole with exterior silicon sealant. Our vermin guy suggested that if that didn't work to repeat but put poison into the silicon and hope the squirrel dies before it gets back in.

Could be. Maybe word is out amongst the woodland creatures that Hoots Mon's brains were eventually blown our through his ass, so they sent in the big fella.

The wife and kids think I caught him live and set him free on the field. I didn't.

The last I heard of Hoots Mon, he'd moved down South to stay with some field mice for the Summer...and that the one you'd caught was some slapper mouse he'd pulled and brought home for a few days. 🙂

Live north manchester and have a trap and bait if to want to borrow it? I had a mare with them in my loft when I first moved in but after dispatching two, no further problems. Get on top of it quick smart - they do a hell of a lot of damage!
Email me if you want.
Good luck!

Some local authorities do offer a more pro-active paid for Squirrel Treatment service, but trapped and the dispatched via air gun, rather than poisoned - I question the professionalism of that advice.

Access to roof space not always needed. Otherwise try a local pest controller?

Deal with it ASAP before it costs you hundreds in damaged cabling/wiring.

If you catch or trap a grey one you have to kill it. Thats the law.

Admi itt. You griddled the little fella one night while your Mrs was out. A minute each side and a teaspoon of dijon. Gulp.

so the vermin man had to recover the body etc did he. why don't you do it your self then? bung in a few bags of rat poison, flavoured if you feel like it and wait for the noise to stop.

we had a squirrel problem recently.. thought a reputable firm such as rentokil would sort it out..

nope.. 400 odd quid and two big ugly squirrel traps like the one pictured (kania 2000) later and after a month we'd had zero results..

enter my brother and his mate with airguns and a bit of squirrelling nouse and after two nights the squirrels were gone.. 6 squirrel pies.. one dismantled dray and a flea in the ear of the rentokil lot

aniseed is a good bait supposedly

Might it be worth talking to others in the row? I'm sure you're not the only ones affected at 4am.
Then bung up the hole with netting/mesh.

solarpowered - when you've caught it, we'll put it in a casserole. Squirrel is supposed to be the new chicken.

I used to manage a building where the squirells would regularily get trapped in the ventilation system, they would smell for about 2 days and then that was it.

There is a restaurant in Edinburgh that had/has squirrel on the menu.

Due to the nature of my loft 50% of it (where the squirrel is) is a 6" gap, between the inner and outer skin. Even the smallest of gunmen isn't going to fit in there. But you knew that. 🙄

Squirrels live and feed outdoors. Get someone to trap or shoot it, that's how we deal with the bushy tailed little barstewards around our house. 😈

One of these.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cheese-STV076-Squirrel-Cage-Trap/dp/B000NWGJNW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344620694&sr=8-1

and bait it with.

http://www.unexco.com/gallery/baittrap.html

Then dispatch the burger with an air pistol.

Simples. 😆

It's a pity you were not closer, I'd be happy to deal with that tree rat for you with my trusty BSA R10

🙂

No joking around but I could probably put you on to a responsible local BASC insured air rifle shooter that will deal with that for nowt?

Yeah they've come a long way, as it happens I've just finished restoring an old Airsporter I found in a car boot sale last year 🙂

I'm doing it for free and can also take it to work to 'do the deed' in another humane way. That gun looks like it might just blow a hole in the side of the house anyhow! 😯
