Dead simple one - you shuffle the deck and give it back to me, then pick a card out and don't show it to me. I flex / bend the deck on the sly. Stick your card back in mate, anywhere, not even arsed. I then close the deck but the picked card will be obvious to me, as it is sitting straight amongst the 51 other slightly curved cards. Bit of practice and you can cut it straight to the top.

Did this one about 20 times in the alehouse one time before anyone got it. We were all bevvied like....

Ask volunteer to pick a card; look at it; put it back on top of the deck.

Shuffle deck. Riffle through deck. "Is this your card?"

Simple and effective. The trick? Sneak a glance at the bottom card of the deck (it's quite easy to to 'naturally' if you turn the deck a bit too far over in your hand as you start shuffling), then make the first shuffle move a cut to place the bottom card on top of the chosen card. Shuffling is unlikely to separate them unless you really go to town.

Then when you riffle through the deck, look for the bottom card again and the chosen card is next to it. A natural way to do this is just deal them out face up; you'll turn the place card, the chosen one will be next.

Thanks for the suggestions, he quite likes Garry's idea after a few practice attempts.

52 card pickup - not a trick exactly but always good for a laugh.
