I've got an Audi A1 2.0 Tdi Sline which is coming up for it's car tax renewal.
It's a 13 plate and this will be the first tax I'll put on it.
The DVLA have asked for 20 pounds for 12 months.
The 6 month line has nothing against it (no writing)
If I tax it for 6 months does that mean it's free?
It did qualify for free tax in it's first year.

This means you can't tax it for six months, only a year.
Be VERY grateful your annual VED disc is only £20.

That's what he said, car tax.
It means that they assume that if you can afford the depreciation and other costs of a new car, you can find £10 more to tax it for a whole year.
Hey, it's 20 quid. That's one of the reasons I could afford the car as I don't like to throw money away.
Its £20 pay up, if you get rid of the car claim it back if your that bothered. But my feelings are if you can affored a 2.0l Sline on a 13 plate you can affored to tax it.
VED is a funny thing. I have a ford focus 1.6tdci,my mum has a mazda 3 1.6
both are the same year both have the same engine both put out the same co2 emmisions hers has alloys and is £30 a year mine has steels and is £105 a year.

So you bought a new (or very nearly new) car because you don't like to waste money? Seems like an odd thing to do.

Well done you! *slow claps*

How is it so bloody cheap to tax?
DezB - MemberHow is it so bloody cheap to tax?
Instead of churning out taxable plant food it gives you cancer.

Are you really sure about that? VED is based on emissions rather than wheel type.
Found one on autotrader - £20K ! Flippin hell
You have to be a bit of a loon to still have a car that isn't cheap(under say..£180) to tax.

Wibble
So I'm supposed to find £20K for a car so I can get cheap tax? Then I'd be a ****ing loon.
£20k for a glorified shopping cart!
I'll stick with my £400 Micra.
It's one of the reasons why I can afford to take hot bitches out to expensive restaurants.
ianW - i think youll find all things considered car tax is such a small portion of running costs that you would have to be a loon to be paying back a significant amount of your salary to save the tax....
company cars BIK excepted.

Not really. My car costs well above that but I'm not about to sell it and realise all that depreciation loss to save myself £100 pa. I plan on running it for many years to come.

You've ruined the subtlety of my mocking.
My 1.7lt Diesel is only £30 to tax

So I'm supposed to pay loan interest and £1000s more in depreciation each year to drive a car that costs £200 less per year to tax? You're right I'd have to be a loon not to...
Not following you tr.
Do you mean £2/3/400 a year on tax is a small proportion if your paying £500 a month on finance and a similar amount on fuel?
Suppose that would be true but still qualify someone as a loon in my book, conceded not in everyone's though.
IanW - MemberYou have to be a bit of a loon to still have a car that isn't cheap(under say..£180) to tax.
That's why I've enjoyed paying less for a pre 2001 5l V8 that does 16mpg than my mate's 2l hatchback. 😈
Expensive way of buying a polo

No, he means that for many people, changing cars to one that was newer, more fuel efficient and cost less to tax would cost them far more over their ownership of the car. The idea of total cost over your ownership being more important than cost per month seems to be one that a lot of folk don't get.
Isn't pre 2001 - £270 ?
That would be the exception to my loon criteria.
I didn't buy it for the cheap tax. I bought it because I liked it (insert you could have had a skoda/polo/whatever for 200 quid comments here).
It's a nice drive, runs on fresh air, looks fantastic (in my opinion) and has a quality interior.
It's my uk car so doesn't do much mileage - currently at 3,500.
The reason for my original post was to see if I could get free tax if I taxed 6 months.
£500 a month on finance
huh? My car is paid for.

Well if the options were £20 for a year or free for six months wouldn't everyone just go six months at a time for free? Why would they offer that option?
IanW - MemberIsn't pre 2001 - £270 ?
It was about £180 last time I taxed my Jag, must have gone up steeply.
Think it was £145 when I taxed my Micra the other day.

They wouldn't. Presumably that's the point at which the admin cost entirely wipes out the money they make from selling you a tax disc and therefore they don't offer it.
My road tax is £260/yr for 2005 Corolla 1.6 auto petrol.
Anyone who is paying less than I do can consider themselves fortunate.
🙄
Robin- tempted to concede the point but it's against the rules so I will suggest that perfectly good cars have been available with under £180 tax per year for longer than most people will run cars( only 20% of cars are over 10 yrs old).
So it may not be sensible to sell them now but it was also the act of a loon to buy them in the first place.
I'll let you google car tax rate history if you don't mind.
the act of a loon to buy them in the first place
Without a doubt, but I love those people because they create a 2nd hand market full of interesting, fun cars that have depreciated away until I can buy and run them at the same overall cost as something superficially far more sensible. 🙂
i mean i spend 300 quid on insurance
i spend 1500 a year on fuel
i spend maybe 3/400 on service and upkeep of the car
but my outlay for the car is zero every year or rather its 3000/X - where X is the number of years owned. so at the moment its cost me 600 a year.
for me to change that to a car thats low/zero rated tax ill be spending 200 quid a month before i even start paying for any of the above.
theres also the small matter of i have not seen many zero rated commercials (my car is infact a van which suits my lifestyle)
Love this thread.
That the OP though that the DVLA were offering the option of paying £20 for 12 months to avoid the hassle of getting it for Free every six months
Why write 6 months on the form with a box to tick?
The 6 month box just doesn't have a price so looks to be a free option.
If you had the option of paying 20 quid or nothing to the government which would you take?
The government is not a charity. If you had the option of paying 20 quid or nothing to the government which would you take?
What did you think?
It is to some.
Why write 6 months on the form with a box to tick?
Because it's probably not worth the costs to amend a notification to remove a box and then stick rules in where the system issues different letters, for different scenarios.
That's quite a major/costly change, as presently it just happily bangs out the same template to everyone.
£240 a year tax on our 'car' but then it saves us thousands a year on hotels and B&B's. Loon club over here, mind the sheep!
DezB - MemberSo I'm supposed to find £20K for a car so I can get cheap tax?
My car cost £2000 and drops into tax band G, which is the STW-mandated £180 pa. Also costs not very much to insure, carries more bikes than I own, makes about 185bhp and 370lb/ft of torque, and wafts around the country on an effortless wave of smugness
Oh, and is broken down but THAT DOESN'T INVALIDATE A WORD I SAID!
