Thanks for the heads up. Looks like potential for a right royal pain in the arse 😡
The only place I've ever needed my paper counterpart is in the UK.
I have only recently rented cars in Germany, but I don't remember showing the paper part ever except when in this country
So, is there a change for hiring in UK too?
I hired a car at Glasgow airport from europcar and it cost another £10 because i did not have my paper part of the licence 😕

I have never been asked for my paper license when renting abroad. I am always asked for it in the UK. Glad to see the back of it.
So what's the point of this "log into the website 72 hours before" system, then? What do hire car companies do for people with licenses issues by countries where there's neither a paper counterpart nor an online system?
Seems like DVLA is confusing things by offering a service that's not mandatory by law...
Jambo is 100% correct. Never needed that paper thing once when abroad, and I'm not even sure where it is.
Last three occasions to USA never asked for paper version. Going again in June, I will take paper version just in case.
Never needed the paper part when hiring abroad. IIRC the paper counterpart was a half arsed solution to the problems that arose when they introduced the photocard licence to get closer to the european standard. Now we have another half arsed fix to a problem that really shouldn't exist!
Slight hijack - Hiring a car in Munich to drive into Austria, any issues with going cross border on a hire car?.

That's cos they're anal ****ers though

Shouldn't be, but I'd confirm before booking.
