Hi all,

Ford Focus, Mk1, Zetec, washer jets not working (front or rear). Plenty fluid, and if jets were frosted up surely theyd have cleared after 3 hours of driving and being sprayed with de-icer?

So Im thinking either blocked hoses, or burnt out pump motor?

Only problem being, I kind of need to drive the car on Monday, and would like to get it fixed before then if possible. However, I dont really have time to have a decent look myself tomorrow.

Anyone know of any garages in Edinburgh that will be open tomorrow, and be able to have a look at it?

Ta, Duane 🙂

Still likely to be iced up. Driving around in subzero conditions (for however long) won't clear them.

Wont the heat from the engine defrost them?

If the fluid is concentrated enough driving around will often defrost them but not always. Can you hear the pump running when you pull the stalk?

Pumps are a known issue on mondeos, not sure about focuses.

Agree if you can hear the pump motor you are still frozen .It happens in my van loads as the pump is under the wheel arch and stays frozen for days

Ok cheers, just gone and checked, motor is still working. The soft rubber pipes running from the jets to the side and down into the side of the engine bay area are soft and dont appear to be frozen.

Any ideas what to do next? Pour hot water over anything washer jet related I can see?

surely theyd have cleared after 3 hours of driving and being sprayed with de-icer?

depends how cold it is (no sh*t sherlock)

my Saab washer jets were fine today in -2 (at best) with undiluted ready to use screenwash. Yesterday they were useless all day, and the temp even got up to +1 at lunchtime

my previous car had heated washer jets but even then they were no use until the engine bay was nicely warmed up & the hoses had thawed out

Also on my old mondeo (and IIRC focuses do this too) eventually the filter at the bottom of the filler tank can get clogged. Easiest way to clean this out is to siphon all the water out of it (which clears some of it), then give it a good hosing out (dislodging the crap), then re-drain it. Then re-fill.

But as others say, it's been baltic up here, probably just frozen.

So assuming "its" frozen, whats frozen? And any simple fix?

IA - I had that on an Alfa 146. The pump was mounted on the outside of the reservoir, simply a push fit downwards into a bit sticking out of the bottom side of the res. Easily reached from under the wheel arch, just pull it out, watch it train; clear & refit, then refill.

My current car is a Saab, the damn thing's well buried - fingers crossed I never need to get at it

Simple fix? I don't think there is one. Get hold of an empty spray bottle, windolene or the like; fill with undiluted screenwash. use it before you set off and FFS don't use the wipers once you've started moving. If you do, you'll need to stop & repeat the treatment
