The last time I bought one the choice was either a plastic set of traffic lights with scent inside or the crappy green trees where you were meant to edge it out every other day
I hate the overpowering smell of strawberries or cheap naff perfume so what would stw recommend ?I've no room to carry a brut or lynx aerosol can and have it rolling about my feet

What plus-one said. I can’t stand air fresheners but smelt that one at the till in Halfords and it’s been in the van ever since

If you have air con, then an air con bomb.

It’s a one shot aerosol deodorising, bug killing scent bomb. Each one is slightly different usage, but the just is run the air con on recirculation, then set the aerosol off inside the car, let the cab run out and the air con recirculate for a while, then vent the car.

Lots of different scents, can be a little overpowering for a week, but definitely gets rid of the bad smells.

First thing would be to give the inside of the car a good clean and evict the dead or growing things first.

It lasted ages too.

Scatter some coffee beans liberally around the car/van. A neighbour's grandkid puked all over the back seat and he'd tried to get the smell out for a couple of weeks. We'd bought a pack of beans (whole not ground) that we weren't keen on so I put a big handful over the patch. Did the trick.

Picture house on a Friday/Saturday evening hardly able to breathe due to fag reek

I’ve got a strawberry scented ‘balloon dog’ attached to one of my air vents, small, unobtrusive, and the scent doesn’t outstay its welcome.

My car isn’t particularly smelly anyway, the only time is when I’m sat in it eating my lunch, if my lunch happens to be a tuna-based meal.
I used to collect the cardboard scent things from cars that I picked up and delivered, and keep them in a ziploc bag, ready for any car that was particularly stinky; one Zafira ended up with a dozen hanging around the car. And before anyone suggests it, driving with all the windows open at 70 on the A303/M5/M4 for 200 miles is not an option!
Some drivers carry cans of Febreze around for that purpose, I always forgot to carry a can around with me.

I've got one of those glass and wooden skewer house diffuser things in the van, sits on the centre console, peony and rose or summit. Lovely.

Lasts ages, recyclable.

When you think you need an air freshener it's time to give it a clean, this goes for car, house and your body, dirty rascals.

A tip from carers in care homes, where not everyone is as fresh as they might be, is to rub a bit of vicks under your nose.

Febreze all the actual fabrics then a febreze air freshener on the vents, removes rather than masking the niffs. Working pretty well on the dogmobile S-Max. Then I hang one of the blue trees because I like the smell.

None - what's this with stinky cars ?

One way of doing the air con is set to recirculate, and then spray detol anti-bac or similar into the passenger footwell and shut the door.

the crappy green trees

I used to buy them on principle, because of this scene in my favourite movie.

Give it a hoover and then wipe all over - parts you dont need to grip - with Muc-Off silicon spray.

Oh and a sex way pineapple freshener on your rear view mirror!

Just give it a clean?

My Berlingo was rank when I bought it, but scrubbed up nicely and no longer stinks. It did take 2x air con bombs, multiple neutradol deodorisers and a thorough wash with fabric shampoo though.

And replace the air con filter. They're often hard to get at so get ignored by garages at service time.

The air con bombs do work, ECP usually have one brand or another on offer.

That and if it's sunny and not going to rain, and you're parked somewhere safe, leave the windows/sunroof open and let the fresh air and UV light do its job.

Thanks for the replies and I think a cherry flavour sounds good
I just wonder why so many think the car or my pick up must be mingin and filthy
Who doesn't like new sheets on the bed with a nice vanilla, maybe lavender or even bergamot orange lightly wafting under your nose
Probably a few on here a quick 2 minute run under the shower with never ever using a deodorant/ anti perspirant

Because you need to mask the smell with cherry flavoured air freshener maybe?

Change the pollen filter.

I used to be addicted to Leather smell air freshener and only ever bought that. Now I’m grown up* and since have a car with leather seats I find sitting in the interior very calming. One of my favourite jobs is cleaning / feeding the leather after I’ve cleaned the car which does enough air freshening for me. I’m not sure if the air freshener was cause or effect.

This one.

*debatable

Espressoal's cheapo air fresheners...

Like the smell of freshly cut grass? then cut the grass and stick a bag of it in your car.

Lavender, parsley, etc, cut a bit and put it in your ashtray, take the fag buts out first.

Clean the carpets and upholstery, smells...er..clean.

Get a car with leather seats, they don't harbor what leaks out of your arse directly into a foam seat.

Fill your ashtray up with oregano or herb of your choice, the dry herb absorbs the odours and gives you back the smell of a Greek hillside.

2 drops of geranium(or whatever) essential oil, if this is too hippie like you can cut a small tree shape from cardboard and drop it on that, then hang it from your interior mirror.

For the really stinky, steam clean it, smells like new for ages.

Don't eat in the car, or if you do don't get bits of food everywhere, independent studies have shown that people who go to Greggs have smellier cars.

For best effects with the above shower frequently and don't sweat in the vehicle.

Next week: feminine itching, and why you didn't have it till you saw the tv adverts.

FWIW, my car, which is relatively new, doesn’t actually smell very much, but where I work, it’s either sit in my car for lunch, or sit in the security guards cabin, on a shonky seat with nowhere to but my stuff other than on the floor.
And as for driving with the windows open, sod that, lots of wind noise, buffeting and stinky car exhaust and random smells from outside to put up with - no chance. My car is nice and quiet and relaxing with the windows closed, and the a/c on.

So does soap, then you rinse it off and it smells 'clean', not industrial strength 'lychee and fig' to mask the fact that it smells of cat piss.

Persil non-bio, lists perfume as an ingredient but presumbaly it's "soap" smell. It doesn't smell of anything in particular once rinsed and dried.

As above, I don't want to go to bed smelling like synthetic sea (what does "ocean fresh" actually smell of?). It's clean, what are you trying to mask?

Some here might be old enough to remember city taxis that did the nightclub run in the 80's, maybe early 90's, the ones that did the 3am shift taking the risk of puke and piss to swindle a few extra quid out of punters that were still wearing half of their kebab and didn't know who they were, those taxi's had a distinct aroma, a rich mix of overpowering lyang lyang, fag end, and beer, with undernotes of sick, chips, sweat, and the stale afterwaft of a thousand varieties of Tesco body spray.
This mixed together to give a pungent heady mix of sickly sweet '80's taxi smell' usually a 17th hand Passat that had been round the clock 12 times with upholstery 98% made of layers of vom.

If Magic Tree did '80's taxi smell' I think they would have it nailed, could be part of the new Reminiscence range.
