Well, I'm not a comic and there's only so much small talk you can make especially if the other person is doing all the listening.
Phone calls are totally devoid of body language which makes things human and you cant concentrate on anything else when using them.

You're doing it wrong. She should be talking and you 'listening'. Even a very basic keyboard should be able to make a 'mmmm' sound, just press with your toe once every minute or so.
