Or is there anything else lying around the house that would work better? Don't feel the need to buy a separate bottle of oil just for the clippers.

I chuck beard oil on it... Because it's already handy in the bathroom.
Not sure I'd fancy mineral oil near my face . I try to keep it off my skin at the best of times.
I bought some of this for my clippers. I figured it wasn't gonna break the bank at £3, although I didn't get it from Pets at Home - I think it was from Amazon.

It's definitely thinner than something like veg/olive oil. I imagine over time something like olive oil would gum up & be a pain to clean off.
Don't have any beard oil.
I do have lots of olive oil but worried about it gumming up the machine.
Yeah I wouldn't use veg oil as they ate 'drying oils ' and will gum. The real stuff is thin, like 3in1 oil. I'd use that. I assume you will wash your hair after so no worries about a bit of greasiness.
What's in baby oil? That's also about the right thickness.

Not for cooking but good to moisturise wooden knife handles and chopping boards to stop the wood drying out.
As sad, organic oil can gum up and go manky, engine oil would be too thick, and probably conatins additives you don't want.

IIRC it's actually a form of mineral oil, you can probably put it in your brakes and forks... But the smell will make you broody.

Anything greasy will do. Veg oils can go stiff but you'll wipe it off anyway. Mineral oils work better. The tiny amount you are using is completely trivial.

Indeed with automotive mineral oils to be linked to cancer of the scrotum.... You pay your money you makes your choices.
Fwiw if you have nothing to hand.... Water lubricates fine for getting the trim done
I use a drop or two the little bottle of oil thats in the box when I first buy them because it feels like a duty to do so - then either lose or throw away the bottle because its rubbish and leaky. Then - never oil them again and they work absolutely fine, for years and years and years.
Am I the only one that just doesn't do it? I've been using my current set for years, never oiled em once, I only replaced the last set because the battery was knackered.

The wahl branded oil is less than a tenner for a lifetime supply. It’s multi use too - I use it for the bearing of my record player which needs oiling every 20 years
I ran out of oil so used GT-85 as it was handy. Doesn't seem to have caused any problems.
Rapeseed oil should be fine, my shredder recommends it (well, canola oil but that's the same thing) and that works on a similar principle.
WD40 works ok, but cooking oil as above. It will get sticky after a while and need washing out, because the bits of hair will stick to it and clog things up.
I know this because I did my hair and beard trimmers this morning for that reason.
