Might sound like an odd question...

I've got a separate amplifier and CD player and I want to put them in the lounge but the not-quite-wife doesn't like these things on show, I sort of agree really. So, if I put them on a shelf in a sideboard (sounds a bit odd, but it would work aesthetically), would they overheat with the cupboard door shut?

My PS3 is in a similar style cupboard and it gets hot with the door shut, so when in use the cupboard has to be open, which is fine. However, this would not be ok for the stereo.

Apologies if this is a bit mundane!

... obviously the speakers would not be in the cupboard!

Should be no problem, I've done so for many years. I had to use a circular saw on the cupboard back to allow cables through.

As far as I'm concerned, you can put it up your arse. 😀

Depends how hot the amp gets and if the CD drawer pops out when the cupboard door is closed.

I'd be very tempted to put some vents in for the sake of the amp at least. cD should be fine though, apart from the door thing perhaps.

I killed an old technics amp doing that. Ventilation is key.

Nice one cheers, I'll open up the back and keep an eye on it.

The CD drawer opening shouldn't be a problem I don't think.

You can, but you can only listen to the Carpenters.

Valid point Jamie.

Might be ok with the Hollies.

Oh, Dexy's Midnight Runners should be ok too.

To widen the genres, say to something classical, I would recommend some Handel.

...although it really hinges on the OP's tastes.

True, he might be an 'Ebony & Ivory' kind of guy.

If he's a bit alternative, Marquetry Moon by Television is an excellent album.

Personally, I'd rethink marrying someone who doesn't appreciate the beauty in a quality hi-fi separates system, but if you must, then yes, just make sure it has plenty of airflow and doesn't get covered with monopoly money and back issues of good housekeeping..

If I were to put a stereophonic system in my wife's Norwegian wood cabinet I Would be banished to shed seven, which would be unfair as it's my perogative.

True, but there's no happiness in having a houseful of technology and no-one to share it with. If he took your advice he'd have everything but the girl.

Simple answer is yes but when you use it leave the door open/ajar, that's what I do. How hot the unit gets depends upon specific kit, IME the amps run hotter than the CD so if you have to stack them put amp on top. If you think about it there isn't a lot of airflow around a car Sterio although that's lower spec but you get my point. FYI the tv cupboard/stand we have has doors on front but completely open back so airflow works that way. Cutting the back out of the cupboard might cause more domestic issues than leaving the door open
