Got the call yesterday, Prophet Jnr has qualified for the kids Mini DH at Fort Bill this coming weekend.

I've never stayed up there overnight, any recommendations for a campsite?

Cheers

The site at Glen Nevis has everything you need, including a pub a few minutes away for when the midges get too bad.

Roy Bridge has a good campsite. A bit away, but if you fancy wild camping then Glen Etive is pretty good. I am thinking of camping that way next week and just bought a midge net. Might be advised.

Glen Nevis would be my choice also. Easy cycle to NR too.

Lochy Holiday Park is the one seahouse speaks of. Owner's daughter is wired to the moon. That's all I know about it.

Sorry to push in on your thread prophet but what would be the best place to park up and kip in the van? Can you park at Fort Bill? Never been.

Billysugger. The Ben Nevis North Face car park at Torlundy is a good spot to kip the night.

You'll struggle to get your van up to NR. North Face car park maybe? Easy stroll/ride to the event. Not a big car park though.

Glen Nevis looks good thanks for that.

Lacking of camping experience here, so here's my dumb question. Is it worth getting a pitch with an electrical hook-up?

What do you have to hook up? It's light until very late and a wee torch will see you through what counts as darkness (the site is also low-lit). You might have a cool-box or want a laptop/phone charger? It's up to you to workout if it's worth the extra cost/hassle (do you have a proper "campsite" extension lead?)

Glen nevis is about the best campsite we've stayed on if not the best.

Is it likely to be full at Glen Nevis on Fri night?

This could be entertaining for a noob.

Have you thought about a little inverter for the car?

I'm presuming you're going in a car.

I like the mad wild camp site at Torrlundy ,midges ,fires, beer, silent disco .Although last year some pissed di-k drove his mates car around the site and over a tent I think ,no one was hurt but there was a stramash. in second thoughts might not be the best place

I still think if heading up the from the South, Glen Etive is a great place to spend the night. Layby's in Glencoe are good despite the 'No Overnight Parking Signs'. The top of Glencoe is good for it's proximity to The Kings House Hotel and the bottom of the glen for the Clachaig Inn.

What I am saying is if you are prepared to rock up with a van or wild camp and don't mind a 1/2 hour drive in the morning there are loads of places you can stay.

I would say top of Glencoe is about 1/2 an hour, maybe 40 minutes from near the top of Glen Etive. I normally go to these places and Fort William from the Borders so I think of them as all close together.
I am sure Ballachulish Bridge at the bottom of Glencoe is only 12 miles from Fort William.

Be mindful of the Olympic torch circus making it's way up through Lochaber on Saturday. There are no shortcuts around it. Roads could be hideous if you're not already close to Aanoch Mor.

Glen Etive junction to Glencoe village - 10-15 mins. Glencoe village to FW - 25 mins. Through FW and out to Aanoch Mor - 10-15 mins. In normal traffic.

North Ballachulish to Nevis Range is 19 miles.

33 miles from the end of the Glen Etive road.

I forgot about the torch. Who thought that one up? Does anyone know the planned route and timings for it that day?

I think it's deliberate so it can go to the world cup. Due in Glencoe about 12 noon.

Is this the plan to endear people to the Olympics? Pick a time when the roads may be busy and add to the chaos. Waiting to see if they plan to head round the M25 at 8am on a Monday morning.

billysugger, all the electric pitches were taken last year by the Friday but small tents were accommodated on the Saturday and Sunday, but it is a risk.

Cheers seahouse. I'll prob be heading up and sleeping in the back of the van so might have to find somewhere within half an hour's drive to stop at. Doesn't necessarily have to be a campsite.

Finger's crossed for the weather.

You might struggle for a camping spot. I phoned round a fair few last week before I got a spot at Roy bridge and even then they could only accommodate me for the Friday.
Good luck

I prefer Lochy but possibly the clientele at Glen Nevis is a bit different from the norm during the WC weekend.

The owner at Glen Nevis is basically in the wrong game in my experience. No dirty shoes in the bar (it's a campsite in the wettest part of Britain FFS). He seems to think he has a posh restaurant (going by the prices) but the diners are supposed to thole it being used as a kid's playground because he banishes them there while their folks are in the bar, from which children are banned.

Historically there has been lots of space at the wild camp no booking
