I'm thinking of getting a VW or Transit sized camper van. Planning to park up for a few nights and ride stuff I don't normally get the chance to ride, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Purbeck and up North. Do you park on proper sites and if so vaguely how much is parking / camping per night. If you park up wild, how do you deal with going to the loo? That's probably a daft question but I'm hoping there's technology that can help. Thanks....

Dont you have a crapper on board. I mean that's the point, no?

Plan ahead with public toilets/supermarkets etc. Don’t use every lay-by as a toilet as seems to have become acceptable in 2020!

However with many places having toilets closed at the moment, and generally trying to avoid other people, we have just bought a Thetford porta potty. Hate the whole thing, but in the circumstances, it seems the best idea.

Normally we use campsites tbh, but it’s very hard to get a space atm with reduced spaces and high demand. Site fees range from £10-30/night in general. However, quite a few don’t have toilets open at the moment...another reason for the portable option.

We use the onboard loo.

Cannot be doing with those that litter every layby with their shite. It's grim.

Half buried shite with every footstep.

Have not bothered taking my van out this year. It looks grim out there tbh.

In the past we have parked in National Trust & Forestry Commn sites, and in a previous van used to poo in the woods. We carried a spade and buried everything well off paths. Now we have a bigger van with onboard bog. It holds a few days of solids, best to wee wild. FOlding trenching shovels are what you need. Or doggie bags.

I can't believe people are camping in a vehicle and pooing in the woods. When your bike packing in the middle of no where then fair enough but not in a van. Either buy a chemical toilet or bag it and tag it.

Problem is its not just you, as trail rat says, everyone does it, eventually there will be another outbreak caused by us this time.

My Transhit in Snowdon expedition mode - cleared of daily junk stuff and fully fitted out with a porta loo, duvet, foam taped to the windows and across the roof to stop condensation drips, snoring farting twitching dog is optional.
Funnily the wife refuses to come with me on my mini expedition's!

You need to dress like Hans Blix on a site visit when emptying a chemical loo that's sloshed around Welsh B roads for a few days. They are grim.

Totally agree. And just for clarity when bike packing, you should ALWAYS bag and pack out paper. Only leave what is natural.

Dunno what that portapisser you have is but this isn't really an issue with a c200

They have a handy spout to pour - and when you use tipping points (not a toilet) there's a long drop to stop it splashing back up you if you were to tip to quick into a toilet.

Its a cheap and nasty ebay 'emergency' user only toilet. I use the proper blue and green stuff in it and it's okay to empty as long as you don't watch the #2's and bog roll sploshing out.
It also once tipped over and leaked after some spirited Welsh driving.....

spirited Welsh driving

The fear is real that over bumps I've forgotten to close the hatch....... In reality you wouldn't ever leave the hatch open because smell.... But at the same time I'm happy it has its own room in case

I think I became a victim of this yesterday, stopped for a pee in a layby (perhaps I’m part of the problem) on the way back from the peaks. Could smell something a bit funky in my mates car, it was used as a dog wagon for years so we thought it could be that. Nearly home I saw what I thought was sheep turd on my shoe then realised I’d changed footwear.

Now I’ve just read this!! Why don’t they sling it in the ditch like the McDonald’s wrappers or are the actually stopping for a turd at the side of the road.

no its the belief that a tiny van can be a place to stay and that of those requirements a toilet is deemed non essential.....

Ive walked round the corner back to my van after being out for a walk/early morning run to see them squatting next to their van doing their morning deeds or a near by tree its sodding disgusting.

Go NZ . No self sufficient sticker - no wild camping - But the locals over there have no qualms about letting you know your being a dick so its sorta self policing.
