So, this is happening - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jun/12/campaign-to-change-stereotypical-search-engine-images-of-female-football-fans
Apparently it is on its way to be a trending subject, many women are already discussing that problem on various forums. I was curious what do you think about this? Obviously it aint a world hunger problem, as a female football fan I'm not bothered that much, but yeah, I think it's a cool little campaign.
This is an issue for people who are fortunate not to have any real issues to deal with.
Link won’t work and I’m feeling spectacularly lazy, what’s the gist of the issue?
I'm a middle aged man and am therefore highly qualified to comment on the subject of female footy fans (irony lols).
I have to agree that it's a good idea to change perceptions and celebrate the fact that women of all ages and demographics are enjoying attending matches. Good show.
I just googled female football fans. Not something I've ever done before to be fair. I now want to go to all Sweden and Brazil away games.
Yep, the camera operators (normally men) seem to find some "totty" in the crowd and keep focusing back on them - see the recent England friendly at Leeds.
Exactly what they do for blokes in the crowd

Are the images that appear at the top there because a) they are put there on purpose or b) because they are the ones most commonly clicked on therefore pushing them up the search rankings?
If a) then yes, getting these results by searching for female football fans isn't great. If b) then meh.
Google image search for "male firemen"
Gives worse results than the female football fans search

Watch a world cup match and see where the cameras hit.
I've just googled "primary school teachers" then "nurses".
The misandry makes me want to flutter my petticoats and say harrrrumpf!
Well it would, if there weren't far more interesting things to do than engage in trivial and petty identity politics.
And I was wearing a petticoat.
Watch a world cup match
No thanks!

Try googling missing the point

Save a lotnof time if they went direct to the TV and TV Broadcast Networks and channelled their angst in that direction, but yeah.. but like it’ll take 20 years like for any change in football arena innit.
but like it’ll take 20 years like for any change in football arena innit.
I think the point is the change has happened, if you take a look around any football crowd they are all shapes sizes and sexes, not just the ladies who look like models who the camera's focus on. I don't recognise many of those from the last few games (Premier League) I've been to
If the ladies who started this campaign spent less time making this out to be an issue , and more time in front of the mirror trying to make themselves look slightly more attractive, this would no longer be an issue .
Or they could ask the sexy female fans to put some clothes on and stop posing for the cameras.

Who said they were ladies? All ladies are women, but not all women are ladies, as my French teacher used to tell me. He also added, "as you will find out later in life". He was a card, too.
This sort of thing goes on at these popular music festivals too. Chaps with their young ladies on their shoulders blocking the view for all those unable to get a chap to give them a lift up.
Blokes need to grow a pair of tits then, see .... that’ll sort it.
But Poldark's fine?

females like footy?
females like footy?
The crushing sense of disappointment is almost enough to give up women altogether.

Typical man. Can’t multi-task.
There are some particularly fine examples of polish women footie fans on my WhatsApp feed! 😍
I was curious what do you think about this?
Do as they wish but if the search engine miss them then the search engine miss them.
If people don't like to look at them then no matter how much they shout there will be no impact.
Waste of time and resources. Is there really nothing more important to campaign about?

Speak for yourself. I swear I've just found my doppelganger.

Lol at convert!
What model is that Gary Fisher?
yeah yeah, you are saying that like you are not staring at my, sorry his chest. I feel objectified.
Interesting article (written by a man) about the men of the tournament being talked about on social media. It's all the ugly ones. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/8f560626-c378-4dbf-ad38-34fd184d9d7d
Turns out we all seem to like looking at attractive people. Who would have thought.
As much chance as England winning.

Yes, objectification of women is fine, isn't it.
But Poldark’s fine?
Oh yes, because objectification of males is empowering and is definitely never ever disempowering at all because women aren't as strong so can't rape men. Where as objectification of women by most men (not the 5 percent who are deemed hot) isn't. You ugly rapey creeps.
Google image search for “male firemen”
whats your problem? that is how I perceive myself at work.
the harsh reality of it is otherswise ☹
But it's not 1st April.
PS I loathe football but this really is a non-issue.
It's an interesting one is this. I mean, I'm totally behind the notion that blokes should see women as more than just sex objects. But I doubt that anyone who Googles "female football fans" are going to be looking for photos of Bella Emberg wearing an Accrington Stanley top. I can only assume that Google weights its search results at least in part on how many click-throughs the results get.
I've just tried something as an experiment:

... which I thought was interesting. Also, if you click through to Images there isn't a single photo of football fans in the top 20 results (other than in the background).
I think the fundamental problem here is that it's not Google's fault, but a result of the pictures that are out there, and the ones people click on when searching for them - which goes through an algorithm and returns what is Google's best guess at what people want.
I think objectification is genuinely a pretty complicated topic - most people will like looking at whatever gender(s) they're into. At the same time, other things certainly should be more important in most if not all contexts.
I think on this basis, Barbie, GI joe and even Lego friends etc. (which all arguably create and reinforce wider societal prejudices and gender behavioral differences) have more to answer for than Google search results.

But to go back to my earlier points, at major World events in certain countries the camera operators seem to have scoped out places to rest their cameras... One Icelandic. Girl gave them a rather appropriate Diego Maradona salute when she found it staring at here for too long.
Waste of time and resources. Is there really nothing more important to campaign about?
Yeah imagine what the propel who trawl through footage to share pics of women at football could achieve if they used their time better? Or had discovered actual porn
I just googled it and I’m dissapointed to announce no image of Bella Emberg wearing an Accrington Stanley shirt was found. Bit of a blunder there.
Does this mean I'll have to add "no munters" to my search strings? Seems pretty harsh.
TBH, the BBC are just as guilty. There was an article about the weather earlier in the week with 4 images. Every image was of a younger, woman.
Why in these types of threads do people have to belittle the issue. If it is an issue for some then it is an issue.
Probably not even on their own top ten of issues but there isn't a limit on issues and there is not a public list of the important tissues that people to need to focus on before dealing with more minor ones.
Why in these types of threads do people have to belittle the issue.
Because some people like being dicks.
If it is an issue for some then it is an issue.
Debatable. Issues are subjective.
I'm not sure belittling this issue makes anyone a dick tbf. Maybe they just see it a a non issue (as does the female who has responded on this thread!)
If you are going to blame the camera men then you also have to apportion some blame to the girls who appear to go out their way to objectify themselves .

Oh well

Yup - just like those who get raped.
Bit of a blunder there.
She was famous for them.
She was also most likely a Brighton and Hove Albion fan. Try that instead.

This.
There's no problem with interracial marriage or homosexuality just because some people have an issue with it.
As I recall the Kylie threads usually had pictures of an attractive young woman in there.
Issues are like tissues that haven’t had their tea.
