We will be in touch
Dear All, have been tasked with buying a digital camera, budget £300, point and shoot that can be used by a variety of people easily. Video a bonus, zoon essential, digital screen essential, media card essential, other than that not too fussy. Suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks.
media card essential
Can you elaborate on this requirement?
All digital cameras use a card of some description (usually SD in point & shoots). Most come with a fairly low capacity card, and they're also sold separately for very little money. I'm not seeing how this is an "essential requirement" for the choice of camera - whatever camera you get, you can add a card for about ten quid that'll still have space left when the camera battery has run out.
Does that clarify anything for you, or am I misunderstanding something?
Sorry I mean the ability to swap in a larger capacity one to the camera.
Any suggestions?
I'd be surprised if most cameras below £300 didn't meet your requirements...can you be more specific?
Not really no 🙂 Will be used by a variety of people (office camera) to take pictures of workshops and talks inside, so needs to be a point and shoot job with a decent zoom. Pics will mostly be used for the web. Sorry can be more specific. Was thinking Canon Sureshot?
So you'd waNT GOOD LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCE AND A WIDE ANGLE?
Damn CL.
I'd read some reviews to make sure the above is good - many cameras are crap indoors. Resolution won't be an issue for the web, nor memory card size for shooting at low res.
Canons are usually safe but you'll need to check re. above.
Panasonic TZ30 unless you want to spend a bit more and go for Fuji X10.
TZ30 has CMOS array, gives you better quality, and ISO goes to 3200, if you'll ever need it that high / low
I'd get a Canon G10/G11 depending on what you can find for the money. Superb bit of kit which produces fantastic results and is very robust.
Many thanks for this 🙂 will go and have a nosey.
I'm a point and shoot sort of person and after trying several different cameras (kids keep breaking them) the Canon Sureshot is the one I'd go back to.
Canon G10/G11/G12 sounds suitable (zoom only 5x tho), nice wide angle and good in low light. Easy to use, as there is an Auto mode for people who just want to take a photo.
Orr the Panasonic Lumix TZ range, which has an insane zoom..
I was using my Nikon P5100 at work yesterday and to be honest the video function did a much better job of displaying what I wanted. This got me thinking, would I be better off with a video camera that was able to take stills.

Then you need to add "rugged" to the top of your requirements list.
Olympus XZ-1 has one of the widest apertures for a compact - this means it'll take good pictures indoors without a flash.
Samsung EX 1 has great indoors performance with no flash and a really wide angle.
And can survive being driven over by a motorcycle. Like mine.
