many thanks shaun
Are you sure you want a fisheye, in later years you may look at the photos and think "did our kids really look like sphere-headed aliens?" 🙂
Fisheye lenses only really exist for SLR cameras and tend to be quite expensive, mine secondhand was £200 and I'm selling it on as it's my least used lens.
Once you factor in the price of a digital SLR you're looking at a lot of money just to get that fisheye effect. A good entry level SLR with a standard kit lens will give you some great shots of your kids and shouldn't cost a fortune.
Sony Alpha 200 should cost about £270; I'm well impressed with mine
My advice like Sim's, is don't get a fisheye for portraits unless you want the distorted look.
Even s/h the fish eye lenses are £200+
or you can buy an old film SLR, a selection of lenses and a half descent scanner and its happy days! (with a bit of a faff and the occasional few quid on film)
Fisheye can be very good but it's a bit of a one-trick-wonder after a while. I'd go with what Sim says, the regular kit lenses with most DSLR's these days are fine for most stuff, they really only start to show their limitations if you're doing huge blow-ups of the images or trying for arty long exposure stuff.
Besides, even cheapo photo software usually comes with millions of arty effects and fisheye is quite easy to simulate.
You'll soon tire of fisheye.
Nikon / Canon / Sony all do low cost dSLR cameras that will produce good results.
