We will be in touch
SO, after a ten year layoff I've picked up a kit from Ebay, as we're putting the band back together - or rather, putting a band together at work to do a few numbers at the Christmas party.
Ten years away has left me more or less unable to play. I can keep a 4/4 beat, but the speed does vary somewhat erratically. That can be cured with a clicktrack and practice, but the rest of my ropey-to-begin-with "technique" has gone.
Can anyone recommend any (free) online courses / videos for me to follow and practice with? I'm not looking to be the next Dave Lombardo, we're just covering Beatles and Slade and so on, but I do realise that good technique will help - unlike when I was 13 and originally learning, when I just wanted to play along to ZZ top and the like 😉
Before you get too far, make sure you prepare your 'Breathe in, Breathe out' recording for your MP3 player or ipod.
MP3 player or ipod.
I own neither of those things 😳
Rehearse. Then rehearse again. After that, do a lot more rehearsals.
Or, to quote Lord Keith of Richards: "Just keep bashing away and sooner or later, Bob's your uncle".
Oooo, I need to bookmark this..
As an ex drummer wanting to get back into it..
🙂
Lol, both at dragonphoenix and the whooshing sound...
WHo is Dave Lombardo?
If its technique you want to recover I would recommend a practice pad and playing rudiments in time to your favourite tunes. Sounds boring, but it does pay off.
There's loads of vids on youtube, Dave Weckl's 'Natural Evolution', Tommy Igoe's lessons, or Jojo Mayers 'Secret Weapons', should help you get stared with good technique.
Don't encourage him chaps, it's really noisey when I'm trying to watch telly, goodness knows what the poor neighbours are thinking 😉
Mrs. nbt btw.

No, I got the joke, I just didn't think it was all *that* funny.
Now if he'd said to have a fire extinguisher to hand, that would have been better 😉

Cheers, that's the kind of thing I was looking for

Back when I could play I did a gig (my one and only ever) one 2 days notice and 8 hours practice with the band. We;re only doing a few songs anywayu
Impressive 🙂
My current band took six months ti be gig ready. Previous band took eighteen!
Rudiments and a metronome! And forget time-keeping and technique in the simplistic sense and focus on being able to lay down a heavy groove and really sit in the pocket. So drum simple groove patterns and make them bounce/stomp/swing so much that you want to dance to them. Playing along with tunes won't force you to find your internal groovability - remember, it starts with you and the bassist and the two of you can only groove as well as the weaker link of the pair.
Brain's 'Shredding repis on the gnar gnar rad' (yes that really is the title!) is a good place to start:
