How much coal should I carry in for a night in a bothy? My first bothy experience and my first coal fuelled fire experience too. Will be taking firefighters, candles and a hip flask too 🙂

At least 10kg.More if there is a group to share it round.

Less if it canm be supplemented with any wood near the bothy.

She's a basic bothy for sure.
Not terribly weather proof(but it was a couple of years ago).
Definately take coal if you can, worth it.

For your second bothy experience try and get to Carlotta's Eyrie. The finest bothy in Scotland. (only sleeps two however).

What can I expect to find in suileag bothy? A fire, I think I saw a sleeping platform on a pic?

A couple of rooms. One if far better than the other It has/had a small sleeping platform. There are fire places in both rooms. Though they both like to smoke the room a bit.

Can I dial-a-coal delivery while I'm enjoying the free WiFi there?

Glen Paen bothy is on the edge of a forestry plantation with plenty of nearby hills to climb if you're flexible on where to go. It had a good fireplace and a decent upstairs sleeping platform as I remember.

25kg and 3l of red wine. That's each, you can never have too much coal - or wine 😉

Make sure you buy a wine box - then you simply burn the box / bag when you've finished.

Some non-MBA bothies are run for the public to use as part of their remit.

One particular bothy in Wales has free gas and a dial up wood delivery service, also free. I kid you not. There is some excellent riding nearby too.

ambrose - would that be the one that starts with a C and ends with a U?
If it is, I love that place 🙂
Never knew about the wood delivery, but the gas is welcome!

Im a big fan of these guys and was an original donor when they needed to mop up the after YHA's f*****-up policies.

the YHA got a shitty letter and my membership card back for what they did.

Flatfish/ Stoner- yup, that's the one. Contact me via FB (Mynydd Du MTB) or email (in profile) for more details. The story is a tale of altruism at its best 🙂

Stoner- The YHA really messed up on that one. I understand the pressures, but those three hostels were a bit super special.
