Ok, i need help (in a lot of areas but we will deal with this one for now)

The house we are now in has phone extensions in a few other rooms, all coming from the BT master socket (NTE5 type)

I could not get my router to make a DSL connection at all (bizarrely it did with a SKY router but I am no longer with SKY for broadband) using a Netgear router, so i used the test socket behind the front cover and there you go, instant connection!

After much looking online it seems that all the wires were not required and i tidied up a bit. With just the wires coming in connected to the socket I can put it all together and get the phone and the internet connected no problem.

As soon as I reconnect the wires that lead to the extensions in the rest of the house the phones all work but then i fail to get a DSL connection again!

So with just the one socket wired all is fine, when i connect the rest of the house it all goes wrong with the broadband connection?

The master socket is upstairs, i need the extensions to be working as very soon Sky are going to be sending me letters complaining about the phone line not being connected to my Sky box.

If anyone out there has any suggestions before i have to call an engineer out and cry at the resulting bill I would be most grateful to hear them.

Many thanks in advance, fingers crossed.

Andy.

First of all, try connection the extensions but leave terminal 3 unconnected. Normally an orange wire with white rings is used for T.3 but its common to find any colour used. T.3 is only used for older telephones and it is what makes them ring, you can still answer a call with the phone after hearing another phone ringing, the bell just won't work. But as a general rule, if your handsets are plugged into the mains as well, T.3 is not needed, the phones will work without it.

If this doesn't fix the problem, check how the sockets are wired. Each extension should be wired off the one before, daisy-chained in one long length. If they are all wired back to a socket or block terminal in a star formation, this can degrade the DSL. It could also be a phone or sky box that is causing the problems when you reconnect the extentions, or even a faulty socket. Isolate everything and connect stuff one thing at a time to try and work out where the problem is.

Does the wall plate have an integral mircofilter? If so I'd try replacing it. This makes all the other sockets nice and neat, so it's usually the best option. If not you need mircofilters on all of the extensions, try unplugging all the phones/sky boxes with the extension wiring in place?

Thanks guys, I have not explored the other extensions as yet, I may whip them off to see what's what.

The master socket only uses the two relevant wires, only in 2 and 5. All phones are plugged in type and not old style ringer phones.

When i have tried connecting the DSL there are no other extensions with anything plugged into them and all when used have microfilters, though only two are normally used, bottom of stairs, kitchen (this one has extension cable running to Sky box, installed by Sky with previous people)

Extensions seem to be in series, not off a block.

Tried that but the house is largish and very old, the walls are just shy of a mile thick! Signal was crap at getting around!

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions but found an extra socket behind one of the tv's that had a lead into an older sky box, not sure who connected it but hey...

Anyway, pulled that out and all good so that must have been iffy.

All good now.....

Not being 100% of your filter setup, do you have working ADSL/phone filters correctly connected to all the extensions?

you need
mircofilters on all of the extensions

Or a master socket with an integrated microfilter, although this means your router can only be on the one socket, and the rest are phone only. Generally the most reliable and neatest option. IMHO

That would be SKY, apparently its part of their conditions that you are connected to the telephone network for the first 12 months of the contract.
Not the first time I have heard of this connection causing problems

To be pedantic, you only need filters in the sockets that actually have a device connected into it.
These 2 pages are very useful. In short you only need wires 2 and 5 connected. Anywhere.
Have a look HERE and HERE for all you need to know.

They did with a friend of mine when he had a fault on his Sky installation. He unplugged it because he didn't want a surface mounted box in his new abode and they insisted on it

Presumably its to gather info on your viewing habits?

It's to check you haven't taken the box to your mates house/villa in Spain. Normally only checked if you have multiroom or a technical issue IIRC.

I'd have a professional put sky wiring and phone sockets in before arranging a "installation" through sky.
