Hi, I’m hoping a singletrack Sparky can spot a simple problem.
We have two light fittings connected to a single switch so both lights switch on/off at the same time from a single switch.
Whilst fitting new light fittings yesterday, I copied the old wiring exactly and now one light doesn’t work.
Fitting 1 has 2 lives and 2 neutrals.
Fitting 2 has 1 live and 2 neutrals.
Does that sound incorrect?
yes that is incorrect!
there are several ways of wiring lights and its really unclear from your description which has been used. Any pics? Have you a multimeter / testing screwdriver? You should have switched live at each fitting and also a permanent live probably at one depending how its wired.
My guess is you have two wires transposed. However it sounds to me like dodgy wiring and one to get a pro in to sort out what is going on.
What is in the switch?
That’s enough for me. Going to get a pro in. Thanks TJ.
The problem you're having is you're assuming that re/black or brown/blue are lives and neutrals. It's not uncommon in lighting for a T&E cable to be used for switch wires, and should be sleeved accordingly, but people don't always (hardly ever). There is also many ways of wiring lighting, which is often a pain (improbable) to diagnose if you're not there with measuring kit.
If you had copied the old wiring exactly the lights would be working.

... assuming the old and new terminals are in the same place on the switches.
