With Little Mefster 18 months old and his little brother/sister due in September, we're expecting to be starting Autumn with 2 children under 2 years old.

Although our eldest is walking with impressive pace and stamina (as long as it's in the direction he wants to go!) we've realised that as the weather worsens, we'll need more than a 'buggy board'. We've just started looking at double buggies for a newborn and 2 year old.

Would prefer to get a tandem type buggy than side by side as I think it'll be easier to get through doorways etc. The Phil and Ted buggies seem to be a popular brand.

It'd be really useful to get any advice from other parents. Which buggies to consider? which to avoid? Any other considerations; durability, design quirks, ease of use, size when folded?

We researched our previous pushchair a fair bit, and spoke to lots of friends. Even so, there are a few niggles that become a little more evident when your trying to fold the pushchair with a crying baby in the pouring rain!

All advice would be greatly appreciated!

Had a second hand tandem buggy. Very heavy but it was 9 years ago no major problems with it AFAIR.

Got a Jane powertwin. Very expensive but we got one second hand. (Why do people spend £450 on a buggy then sell it 3 months later for half that???)
All that expense means there are no niggles. Can't think of any. Folds up and down easily. It just works very well. I'd highly recommend it.

Even the disc brake I thought was a gimmick turned out to be actually quite useful going downhill loaded up.

Don't buy anything with little wheels. That's just silly.

Thanks bedmaker. We'd looked at the powertwin- seems to get mixed reviews. Some people mentioned that it can veer to one side and be a little unstable and prone to tipping when going up curbs. Have you had any problems like this? What age were the children when they were in it?

A buggy no use for a newborn if I remember correctly, our two have 18months between them and the missus got quite a large pram with a forward facing seat on the front for the oldest one. It was a great tool for pushing the kids around and the oldest could sit up front and see where they are going. The baby could back at mum or dad and recent research shows this is a positive thing Not something you can easily stick in a boot though. I think it was mammas and papas??

When I say tsndem buggy I mean one that can have a 'cot' section for the newborn. I think the Phil and Ted ones have this in rear (stoker!) position so it's sheltered form the elements

Aye, I suppose it probably does veer more than a 4 wheeler would now you mention it. Only really does it on heavily cambered pavement or if a child is dangling out the side, as they like to do from time to time.
Putting the heavier child in the back helps.

Girls are now nearly 3 and 16 months. Had the buggy since the youngest was born

Loads of second hand Phil and Ted's on the internet's favourite tat bazaar. I paid 165 quid for one and it's been worth while as when we come to sell it I expect to get most of that back.

If you want a second hand one, log on and start watching loads to see how much they go for and what sort of condition they're in. There's lots of accessories so make sure you know what you want and what you're bidding for. Then when you know what your price is check those out that you can pick up as you'll pay loads for postage and start bidding. Don't go mad bidding for the first one you see as there really is a steady stream of them up for auction all the time.

Thanks Matt. We have been keeping an eye on Phil and Ted's on fleabay. Need to work out the difference between the different models. Unfortunately the Phil and Ted website is really frustrating to navigate and try to compare models. I feel a bank holiday weekend trip to the baby shop coming on!

we've a Phil and Ted and it never let us down. 2 years of hard use, inc trip to spain with bmi - which is survived, its starting to look a little worn but its fine.

easy to push and seems comfortable for the kids (now 2 and 3).

We just ordered one of these for when our twins arrive.

Went to the Baby Show and fiddled with most of the twin tandem ones and this was about the best, not the smallest but then that means that the kids at least have some room. Does from birth to 3+ and both can face either way at rhe same time. Made by the same people that make the fancy folding one on the aprentice this week
