Agreed on the bad design; they are delicious but impossible to eat cleanly thanks to the structurally weak inner layer and the rigid outer layers. A Kit-Kat is the opposite.

Doughnuts. Mmmmmm. Follow Fanny Craddock's recipe and you'll get doughnuts just like Fanny's.

Ah, you can't beat Fanny's when they're moist and sticky and cream-filled. You'll be licking your fingers all day.

Simples - pastry top comes off and eaten first. Then the bottom layer/custard combination devoured after that with minimal custard/hands/lap/floor combination.

Struggling to eat custard slices or cream slices? Rotate them 90 degrees around their longitudinal axis and its pretty much problem solved 🙂

Too much sweet stuff going on in here. We need some balance. Heres the legendary Cow Pie at the George in Keswick. Death by beef!

All decent efforts fellas, but here's the top dog:

Mmmmm…. cream horn.

If you don't want to chew the top off, that juicy goodness just sucks right out. 😀

I've been to the George. Why didn't I eat that?

To be fair it was 20y ago, might not have been on the menu back then. I feel another visit coming on.

Seriously, how much cow is in that pie and how much does this magical pie cost?

Pie wise steak and cheese is the best.

Dough nuts are undoubtedly the finest sweet baked good, but they don't seem to be as good as when I was a youngster, the skin isn't wrinkly enough and so you don't get as good a coating of sugar.

That's not life - life's a balance of doing a little of what you like, which welcomes cake and bicycle kicks to 'hit those obliques' with equal measure, then you die.

Come on skinny, have a bit of of battenburg...come on...

That pie is fantastic. I'm unsure what the vegetables are doing on the plate. Wouldn't have thought an establishment serving an entire animal encased in pastry would go for pointless decoration.

My daughter loves baking. She's working here way through this book

I had to google that pie. I had misread the post, it is Keswick. I stayed at the George in Penrith. That explains it. Planning my next Lakes trip now...

Best cakes are home made ones...that way you can eat them warm with a crusty top, dripping with melting cream or fresh creme anglais (custard, for any northerners reading this).

Just had a huge chunk of a gloopy sticky soft ground almond cake I've made this evening. Lemon drizzle, who needs flour!

Best cakes are indeed home made, by my wife and middle son. Marrying a trained baker was an excellent move. 8)

And the daddy of all cakes: Lemon Drizzle

No one mentioned Lardy Cake yet? Only had it once when down in Gloucester but I had 3 pieces in a row!

Anyway, I'm off to plan a trip to Keswick. 😀
