So, i fancy having a play on the stock market.
I've got a few short term risky gambles planned, but would like to spread the risk with some long term safe bets.
After the battering they took in the reccesion, are banks now a safe bet for growth?
Long long term, yes. You've missed the boat for making very big returns on Barclays, etc., though.
Motley Fool: http://www.fool.co.uk/ has info for those looking to start investing this way.
The only thing that banks have learnt is do not get caught. There is probably worse news to come about banks.
Buying shares in a bank - good idea?
Lets hope so, we've all bought a few! 😕
That boat left port months ago.
Shares that are currently paying a decent dividend are worth looking at.
Save your money for when the tories get in, interest rates skyrocket and house prices plummet...
Long term they will be a good bet, 2 years at least, the people who bought when they were in single figures have made a killing. At current price you will do ok but not for a few years.
I know sod all about shares but I know a man that does 😉
Unit Trusts are sensible - something like Schroder UK Alpha Plus.
I remember a guy on here who put his shirt on Northern Rock when their shares hit the floor - just before ...........
Couldn't fail apparently
well you know what happened next
18000+ RBS shares here, thankfully not all bought at high prices. Still sitting on a big loss though. 😳 Got to be worth a punt in the longterm. 🙄
Probably safer than playing roulette but not as much fun.
This time last year was a good time to invest. I gather the more cautious investors are now moving into cash (but probably not Sterling) pending the results of the election...
I lost £10k back in the dotcom boom; I worked for a biggish IT company called marchFIRST and the shares were coming down; the management were saying all was OK so when I went contracting I thought it worth a punt; unfortunately they went bust - no bail out for them.... Made it back and more though when I joined and invested in a start up IT company which is now part of one of the big consultancies.
Too late if you want to see any big increases in share price. If you want a gamble, go with either Land securities or British Land but you will probably have to wait a year or two before you get any decent return.
