I'm half way through a paragraph and I've forgotten a phrase.

It's the name for a standard design / architecture of a product - say an engine that drives a gearbox, a steering wheel and 3 pedals placed in the normal manner is the standard for a car.

It's something along the lines of common design, concensus design or something, but I can't remember it for the life of me...

Edit: I am, of course, already furiously googling.

Nope, it's in the same section of the literature as all the format wars stuff, architectural innovation etc.
