You don't have to do the linky thing. Just paste the URL as text and it'll show as a YouTube video.

I thought that's what I did. Ah well, thanks.

A genius of song writing and arranging. Often dismissed, by idiots, as trivial easy listening, but actually musical craft of the highest calibre.

What shame, a good long life though and and an amazing legacy to leave behind!

Didn't realise 'Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head' was one of his.

Always find myself singing along when one of his and Hal David's pops up on the car radio.

Saw him at the Usher hall maybe 7 years ago looked pretty frail then but had plenty folk helping him out that night and like many folk never realised how many famous tunes he was involved with

I would never have dreamed of listening to Burt if it hadn't been for his cameo in Austin Powers. That made him properly cool to me. A truly great songwriter and musician who'll be sorely missed.

Come on she had a voice like an air raid siren.

Dusty Springfield on the other hand......

So good that his songs could be revitalised every generation and still work. Proper legend.

... he had a daughter named Raleigh. Conceived in Nottingham perhaps?

So many great songs

And as far as I'm concerned Dusty can do whatever she wants!

I have been enjoying a Bacharach playlist this morning.  It set me to thinking about being a "great" or "influential" and my contention previously expressed that you need to transcend your genre and time to be considered such and to be recognisable from the sound.

Bacharach clearly was a master of "pop".  He also wrote some great songs for soul singers but were they "soul"?  I have also heard reggae covers of his songs.  I've been looking for some rock covers but don't know of any ( anyone?)

His sound is very distinctive and I have heard his songs being covered by recentish pop and soul singers.

I think anyone who had such an influence on pop music worldwide must be considered a great.  What a discography he has and that lush string sound is instantly recognisable as his.

Just found a Faith No More cover and they love him.  I'm going to look for more genre busting covers

Urgh - Its an amazing voice. Unless of course you think you have a better understanding of the art than Mr Bacharach himself.

Found an Oasis cover of " this guys in love with you"  Its not very good tho 🙂

Rumer did a lovely album of Bacharach covers not that long ago.

Sanchez with an 80s dancehall cover ( not great either 🙂 )

On the news last night they played a bit of Aretha, a bit of Dusty and lots of Dionne. Iconic, fantastic voices. And then they played a pub singer which I quickly realised was Cilla. The difference was stark.

It is, but she still had an amazing voice.  It's lovely to listen to and a million miles from pub singer

M'Lud, the only evidence that I will submit to the jury this afternoon is any rendition of Surprise Surprise, inflicted on the nation every Saturday night from the mid 80s. I rest my case.

Cilla Blacks ‘voice’ is jokingly bad.  Truly awful imo.

Loads of cracking covers up there though - Faith no More and Rumer.

RIP Burt - truly a one off.

I love all Bacharach and David songs.

When Cilla was recording Alfie, Burt made her sing it many times over, he was a perfectionist and not always easy to work for or with.

I for one loved Cilla's singing voice, not so much the talking version :O}
