Linking to it would be a good start actually.

You need to do the opposite of that, and some other stuff. HTH

Have you used well thought out h tags for each page? And meta data - not applicable with all search engines but helps. The best thing you can do is cross link with high traffic sites (with permission of course) you could also setup a google adwords campaign

buy some advertising from stw towers, take a photo of a vastly overweight person wearing very little and holding a battery, pay one of the many stw graphic designers / web geeks to knock you up a flash ad linking from said pic to your site and bingo, traffic!

SEO is vital. On top of what M6TTF said, you need to get a lot of backlinks (i.e. lots of links from other sites coming to you) to get the best rankings and also consider Google adsense for advertising. There are a lot of "Make your site work with search engines" products out there but be warned, a lot don't actually work.

Populate it with decent content and promote it - go to a few of the bigger search engines and manually add it to their spider index - they will start indexing your website and it will slowly start appearing on the rankings...by getting it mentioned and linked to from other websites it increases the likelyhood of a higher rank (as there is more popularity).

For each page, make sure you have relevant meta keywords and meta descriptions, try to get linked to from a number of related sites i.e. industry-specific sites - reciprocate the links.

Email footers should mention your web address as should any web posting you make - don't make it detract from the post, but having it mentioned all over a website forum can help (but could drive people away after a constant barage of 'subliminal' advertising on your posts - use this with care and caution).

Banners - can be fiddly to make but can have a good effect if you get them on appropriate websites - if it's bike related, contact STW, Bikeradar and Bikemagic plus some road riding sites and see how much it costs to advertise on them and also find out what kind of advertising they do - make appropriate banners for each and pay your money and traffic will increase...as traffic increases and word-on-the-web increases the site rankings will increase and improve thus making it easier for your site to be found in search engines.

Ultimately make sure the content you have on your site is worth coming back for as once the person has been once the only reason they will come back is because the content has value to them.

What is your website?

Not so obvious to me. You want people to get to it from google, but not from here? 🙄

I find SEO a black art of opaqueness and mystery, but this helped me: woorank

You put your site address in and it gives you user friendly tips on how to improve the indexability etc of your website.

Having said that, I score a measily 32.9 wooranks so what do I know...

STW is actually a really good site to get linked from and up your rankings in google.

I agree about advertising on STW - works well. Sorry about the fat man.
Don't bother with bikeradar - massively expensive. In fact when I pointed out to them just how much it costs per click based on their figures their rep abruptly halted the email conversation.

Thanks for that, very interesting.

My site gets 70.3, which seems not too bad. We have suddenly started getting the odd top google news result after submitting our pages for indexing the other month. I think that really helped, but was all done by the techies so I can't elaborate I'm afraid.

I think you're doing a good job, hint at its existence on STW so you develop a following of click-crazy fanbois just gagging for it and then arrange for it to be "accidentally" revealed and have it soar up the ratings in the ensuing click frenzy :o)

Hi again,
molgrips was right I dont want the wrath of the mods . Once I have tidied it up now I can see what it really looks like I am looking at getting it on singletrack advert space.
In hindsight with a few too many beers last night maybe I shouldnt of posted this message.

Nothing wrong with razzle, still got a few tucked away amongst my record collection for safe keeping... mrs smudge isnt interested my old records so good place to hide them 😆

until you die and she has to sort it all out and finds your old tug mags and her sweet memories of you are all blurred because she can't remove the image she has in her head of you pulling your manhood like an excited school boy over Janine, 22 from Colchester.
