Hi all- I am wholly confused about Bluetooth mice. I really don't like trackpads at all. I'm after a wire free mouse for my laptop, a Lenovo B5400 thatI believe to have Bluetooth functionality. The laptop only has three USB ports so if I can get a mouse that doesn't need a plug-in dongle I'd be a bit happy. Any suggestions?

Cheers and beers, Ambrose.

A bluetooth mouse should do what you want. I've seen and used one by Microsoft, and it worked like a cordless mouse...

Communication
The Gigabit Ethernet adaptor is provided by Realtek (PCIe GBE Family Controller) while Lenovo uses an inexpensive single-band Realtek RTL8723BE WLAN module (802.11 n). This means you cannot switch to 5 GHz networks if there are interferences with other wireless networks. We are not overwhelmed by the signal quality but the result is satisfying: Windows still had four out of five bars with a distance of 15 meters in our non-standardized test and websites like notebookcheck.com were loaded quickly. Similar to most laptops, the B5400 does not get a connection with a distance of 40 meters to our router (Fritz!Box 7270, transmitting power 100%). The wireless module also supports Bluetooth 4.0.

CountZero now filed in my head as a rude person 😉

I can honestly say that I really don't understand the great majority of what he? has posted. I think however that the last bit means that I don't need the little dongle thing. I might be wrong though, but the helpful bold type makes me think I might be able to dispense with it.

Many thanks.

CountZero, if you are in Llanwrtyd Wells this weekend for the Real Ale Wobble I'll buy you a drink. I'll be in a Black 'Mynydd Du MTB' jersey.

Technology may have changed, but my experience of BT mice is that they're laggy and, well, crap.

I'd go with one with a miniature wireless dongle. I have a Logitch Nano, the adapter is USB but sticks out less than half a centimetre.

Similar to this,

I hunted out a bluetooth mouse a while back because I didn't want an additional dongle.

First one I bought years ago was awful, batteries lasted about 2 weeks and it was laggy as hell.

Bought another MS one about 2 years ago, that was great, loved using it but the batteries only lasted about 6 weeks and it eventually packed up.

The one I replaced with, also MS, isn't anything like as comfy and it's bigger, but the batteries now last about 6 months which is finally good.

I can't be doing with extra dongles on my laptop. Only (slight) downside is that if you reboot into a different OS it needs re-pairing - this wouldn't happen if I had a dedicated dongle I think.
