Ok, new house is on an *edit* [s]unbundled[/s] bundled BT exchange - is the only (cost effective) answer to go to BT for phone and broadband? ( 😈 )

depends on what technology you can use - i.e. what kind of box they have at your nearest mast? HSDPA, 3G, EDGE, GPRS.

It depends on your location.

I thought you wanted a package for landline and internet?

Unbundled exchanges have many suppliers with their own kit in there, non-unbundled is BT only (or other suppliers using BT kit). If your new house is on an unbundled exchange you surely have more choice than anyone?

Unlikely you're gonna get a tremendous mobile signal Matt. Ask locally - what does everyone else do?

A quick google finds this..

We havent used a landline for years (mainly to avoid marketing calls) but also simplicity. We do have a BT landline for broadband, but in theory we could go fully mobile as soon as it made economic sense/they stick an HSDPA transmitter within range.

Locals say mobile broadband is poopy for most, good in a couple of small locations.

I thought in bundled exchanges, you can still go non BT for your Broadband and calls, just whoever it is goes through BT wholesale?

You have to pay BT for line rental though (£11 a month or so).

As I understand it, our exchange isn't unbundled, so we get line rental from BT, but broadband / phone calls go via Virgin.

If it's bundled you can still choose your ISP, but you will have to pay BT for the line rental, as per joemarshall.

In which case you'd obviously choose pretty much anyone except BT as your ISP 😀

My exchange isnt unbundled and everything gets supplied by BT but Tiscali pay BT to take my business (i.e. I pay tiscali for line rental, phone and BB but it's almost entirely BT hardware doing it). When anything happens to it Tiscali have to ask BT to deal with the problem. This is the reason I cant get tiscalis cheapest option (the exchange isnt unbundled), or so Tiscali tell me.
