Off to Siberia next week for work, it's -27 apparently. Never done -27 before, esp. in a suit. Any suggestions? (and no, there is no room in my carry on for a Fat Bike)
Don't eat the yellow snow.
The Russian spy is easily identifiable. He's the one with snow on his boots.
I lived in Russia for a while and experienced similar temps whilst I was there. The cold is usually very dry and not as bad as it would appear. Try breathing in through your nose and feeling the ice crystals forming in your nostrils!
Vodka helps (so I was told) with the cold and the lovely Russian ladies in their glamorous fur coats also help.
Make sure to go for a wee in the snow...
Hmmmm!
Fab Foodie on Cycle Chat has just come back from the same place; they had a bit of a problem when the town's central steam heating plant broke down.
MrsMC spent a year in Ekaterinburg in the late 90s. Got down to -38 that winter. Tends to be a dry, still cold, rather than raw damp wind chill. Follow the advice of the locals, wear layers, don't expose any skin to the cold if you can help it, keep rubbing your nose so it doesn't get frostbite.
Try not to stand on the drunks who froze to death on the pavement when you go out in the morning. She had quite an experience, suspect it isn'tas tough these days
We had -28 on a trip to Lapland 3 years ago as well, again was best to wear layers and copy the locals
I've had -23, it was nice actually. I had been wearing technical shirts, a fleece and a waterproof to walk to work - I just added some fleece tights under my trousers, and a balaclava under my hood instead of just a hat.
I found out how snow actuall does crunch like broken glass if it's properly cold.
After some experimentation in Northern Finland and Sweden doing cold testing for cars, i can report that UK spec "beer overcoats" work only down to about -22degC, below that, even when hammered, it's sodding freezing!
😉

Predictable reply is predictable.
cheers (I think). Mr MC it hard to copy the local until I get there!
Layers and vodka is what I thought!
LOL - after 12 months over there MrsMC's capacity for vodka was truly terrifying for a 4'10, 6 stone slip of a girl!
I'm out in a very chilly Finland now. Temp can vary massively, it's now -23 in town. (Rovaniemi) & -29 further out in the country. Lots of layers, thermal underwear, lined trousers, 2 sizes + on boots & 2 or 3 socks the biggest gloves you can find. Minimise exposed skin, the fluid in your eyes gets thick & gives a curtain effect. If it's cloudy expect to be in a monochrome world. You'll understand why SAD is so popular
Enjoy...
Try licking a lamppost . What's the worst that could happen ?
Test chamber at work is not much fun at -50.
Literally takes your breath away.
So here I am in Siberia, cold is fine except windchill making my face numb. Journey is pretty crap, even worse on way back. Off to see the hockey stadium wot Abramovich built and going to Russia's largest refinery tomorrow - living the dream.
Thankfully no yellow or orange snow yet Drac.
